Hi! I have a problem similar to one posted recently in this forum: My wired desktop PC (Win2000 on PIII with 40 GB and 512 KB SDRAM, cable modem) suddenly can’t connect to the Internet, even though I’ve made no recent changes to hardware or software; meanwhile, my wireless network (and the desktop's Ethernet card) appears to be functioning. I’ve checked some things that seemed logical to me, then poked around the wonderful forum here for more ideas but still am not able to get online. I’m not a super techie person (I know just enough to get myself in trouble ), so please go easy on me!

Things I have done that have not changed the situation at all:

Check cable modem function - OK (laptop is connected via wireless network)
Reset cable modem
Shut down PC overnight (+ many reboots)
Check Network/Connection properties - Enabled
Uninstall/reinstall TCP/IP
Check Device Manager Network Adapter (hardware troubleshooter) - working properly
Uninstall/reinstall Ethernet card (D-Link PCI adapter) with driver from original CD
Try to ping PC - Unsuccessful (Request timed out 4 times)

I also checked ipconfig - Two numbers appear to be missing (Connection-Specific DNS Suffix and Default Gateway). How do I get them back?!

copy and paste the following lines into notepad and save the file as "What the....bat" on a floppy or thumb drive that you can get to the desktop. (too bad it isn't XP, this could be easier)

run "What the....bat" on the desktop, wait a while for it to finish, then attach "result.txt" to an answer to this post. Because this is a public forum you may wish to edit out any info you deem personal from the file (computer name for example)

the default gateway ip is the ip of your router....this is NECCESSARY to get online...is your ip assigned automatically or statically? (on the pc)

IP assignment is set to automatic ... since forever. Can I somehow copy missing info from the laptop configuration, or is the "refresh" route on the desktop the way to go?

BTW, I haven't tried the suggestion from anynamewilldo b/c I figure a banned poster can't follow up ... but does it sound like a good idea?

yeah go ahead and do that....it will basically put all the ip configuration info that i need into one file

did you get any errors when you ran the batch file?

can you show me ipconfig /all omit any sensitive info like the full ip ...but keep in mind that i do need a little bit of sensitive info...maybe just take off the last set in the ip address

As for errors, there was something about not all DCHP somethings having something ... I thought it would be in the report so didn't pay too close attention. Sorry!

The ipconfig info is attached; as you can see, nothing in 1st or last line.

you don't have an ip address....or a default gateway.....basically whatever is supposed to be supplying your dhcp ..is not..theoretically (as long as you don't have any routers in between) your cable modem should be supplying dhcp....did you have any power surges or failures recently?

So many questions ... here goes.

I installed the external cable modem ~3 years ago.

I do have a wireless router running off this modem -- the desktop is wired and the laptop wireless.

We had a power failure or something over the weekend (clocks were blinking when we returned), but I was able to access the Internet from this computer after the power failure.

I also have an UPS connected to that PC.

just trying to see why the dhcp got lost....

get into your router configuration...usually by putting it's ip into your webbrowser and make sure that dhcp is set up

It says DHCP Server Enabled -- is that what you mean?

just so i can get the layout right:

cable from wall > cable modem > router > desktop?

is this how the thing is set up?
