I have a new ASUS K8S-MX motherboard with an AMD64-3000+ chip. I have loaded the new Windows XP Home which has SP2 and can get no sound out of the onboard ADI AD1888 SoundMAX audio. Out of curiosity I reloaded my old XP which is only at SP1 level and the sound works!

I have downloaded the latest AD12888 driver from the ASUS site with no improvement, and cannot find any reference to the problem elsewhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions that may help? After two days the frustration levels are nearing breaking point!

Start->Run. Type "services.msc". Press Enter.
In the right pane, check if the Windows Audio service's Startup Type is Automatic.

Thanks darth_ash,

I checked as you advised and the Windows Audio service's Startup Type is set to Automatic.
