I used Killbox and Cleanup to successfully remove NewGenLook but my desktop still has the "Security Warning, a fatal error in IE has occurred at..." on the background screen. Where do I go to remove it? Thank you for your help. Here's my log:

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

Hi K2AV,

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Open HiJack this and do a scan.

Check off the following items:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

Click FIX CHECKED, then close HJT

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

Reboot and tell me how your computer is.

I assume I should renable system restore? Also I checked 2 boxes related to showing hidden files and folders. I can do the system restore, but I don't remember where the hidden file boxes are. Can you point me in the right direction?

Great job, it appears your computer is clean

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were:

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make
sure that Do not show hidden files and folders is checked. Check the
Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected
operating system files option.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir


The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Thanks for all your help and recommendations and I will follow them. I have virus protection (Norton) and Spybot S&D and MS anti-spy. I'll definitely get firewall software and use it. I hadn't realized it was so critical. I have it on some computers, but not all.

I normally keep current on system updates from IE on my other machines. This particular computer got reformatted after failing and then it sat around for about a year before being pulled into service again recently and that is why everything wasn't up to date, but I blithely went online anyway... and then it got kooties.

Anyway, this has been a big learning experience and having this forum to go to gave me the confidence to try to fix it myself. I can't thank you guys enough for that.
