I'm running Windows-XP-pro, SP1, AMD Athlon 3.3Ghz, 512MB RAM, 80 GB disk. Also AVG Anti-virus and AD-AWARE SE pro.
Since one week ago I face STRANGE messages, in two formats:
1 - Every few minutes (depends on which application is running), a message appears like: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvinience" Possibilities are "Debug" or "Close". If you close, an application is closed (might be another app.).
2 - The same as above but with more possibilities like "send a message to microsoft" or "don't send".
Attached is a sample.

Please help to get rid of it.

I'd like to add another info:
Approximatly each 1 minute appears the window message I showed in my first post. However, I found (by "Windows task manager" ) a process called "dwwin.exe". When I delete this process, the window disappear - till the next munute, where a new pop-ups.
I searched drive C and found the following "dwwin" occurences in the attached figure. Does this info helps ?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

There are quite a few programs available that offer protection features to help keep a computer from getting infected. While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep you from making the changes necessary to clean your computer. Please review the list to see which programs apply to your machine.

These programs need to be uninstalled

AdWatch

These programs can just be disabled

Microsoft Antispyware
TeaTimer
SpySweeper
Win Patrol
Spyware Guard
Pestpatrol
Regrun
Diamonds Process controller

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

    SafeGuard Protect PCShield
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Hello,
Thanks a lot for the info.
I've used the previuos post ideas, and activated EWIDO which solved the "annoying popup virus".
However, I conducted the steps you've suggested and the results are below (ewido, smitRem, HijackThis) .

Also I'd like also to mention that:
1- I couldn't find PANDA ACTIVESCAN, therefor I activated AVG: No virus was found.
2- I could't find "Security Info" in your suggestion " Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present "
3- I'm using AD-AWARE and AVG, and EWIDO on a regular basis now.
Thanks & regards

Right click Here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop. To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Reboot your PC.

AVG can be corrupted since it is your anti-viral, so please run panda again.

This link is good. Click on the "Scan my Pc" button (using Internet Explorer) and it will be installed.

Copy and past the log into this thread.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:

Thanks for the rapid reply.
Two questions before I run the procedure you've adviced:
1- the three occurences of "O16 - DPF.." are known to me, i.e TAPUZ & bankleumi.co.il. These are ISRAELI web-sites.
Question: DO I NEED TO REMOVE ?
2. The link to PANDA Uprovided does not work. Can Ufind a correct one ?

Regards, Hava
