Hi,

Your help would be much appreciated with the following ...

Win XP system in the middle of a defrag gets rebooted *ahem accidentally

Reboot reveals that once the initial BIOS boot is complete, there is no apparent OS to boot from. The screen remains blank with no info and the cursor blinking in the top left corner.

Have tried the XP setup CD and it is not giving the option to Repair the installation.
When the XP Setup gets to the point of choosing the partition to install the new OS on, it doesn't recognise the main partition (40G) as having XP already installed on it, and it is returning the file system as Unknown.

Now, I seriously don't want to have to format the partition, is there ANY way that I can get it back to the way it was? I'm thinking mbr, but I'm only guessing at what needs to be done.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated

there are actually two repair screens, one a repair using recovery console and one a repair installation (which is basically installing windows over itself).

does neither option present itself?

If you have a recover console, I would suggest booting to recovery console and typing

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0

Thanks for the reply.

There is no Repair option at all. I also don't appear to have anyway of bringing up a console to enter commands

download rc.iso from the above site

burn the image to a cd (this is not the same as copying the iso to a cd)

boot with the new rc cd in the cd-reader

choose recovery console

type

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0

at prompt
