Win 2000 has problems

I have a Windows 2000 (Service pack 4) system which started having problems recently.
Problem 1. I keep geeting the message Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to send ..... to Microsoft. If I select don't send the window closes but I still cannot access the Internet. If I select Send nothing happens and the window reappears.

Problem 2. I cannot access My Computer, My Network Places, and Control Panel.
If any of these icons are selected I get a window with the message. explorer.exe has encounted an error and needs to restart. OK must be pressed the screen goes black and my desktop reappears but my problems still exist.

I ran ad-aware and removed 280 items with no effect. I downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy and it found and fixed 5 items of which one was ROTUE. After which my control panel and Internet Explorer work properly. If My Documents or My Network Places are selected all problems reappear and Spybot must be run again. Also if I reboot all problems reappear.

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
