Hi! A week ago or I started getting the WinFixer2005 Installer prompt every time I start up the computer. I just need some help getting to the source and getting rid of the blasted thing. So, here's my Hijack This! log:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp and install it, but do not run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Now run CCleaner.

1. Uncheck 'Cookies' under 'Internet Explorer'.
2. If running Firefox: click on the 'Applications' tab and uncheck 'Cookies' under 'Firefox'.
3. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Give me this log also:

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Now run CCleaner.

1. Uncheck 'Cookies' under 'Internet Explorer'.
2. If running Firefox: click on the 'Applications' tab and uncheck 'Cookies' under 'Firefox'.
3. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Give me this log also:

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hello again! Thanks for your help, but I have a slight problem. It's probably really stupid, but I'm not that big of a computer person, so, if you can forgive me for troubling you with this. Well, I can't get into safe mode. hehe. I tried, but every time the screen just comes up black, you know, with "safe mode" in white font in the corners. I don't know what to do. I'm wondering if maybe it just takes a long time for windows to start up in safe mode or what? anyway, when I go into the F8 menu when I reboot my computer, there are three different safe modes listed: Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

I've been choosing just the plain safe mode. Then when I click on that it gives me two options:
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Recovery Console

I've been choosing the Home Edition. Anyway, I hope you can help. I am really anxious to get rid of this WinFixer thing. Thanks for everything!

If they still don't work, then you may do this in Normal Mode. So continue on either way...

Which files can't be deleted? See if you still have the same problem after doing the below:

Download Process Explorer at http://www.sysintern...s/procexpnt.zip.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. OK, before we go on, I want you to take note of this first. This program will wipe out all files in your Temporary folders, any file extensions that have a tilde (~) in it, .bak files, .chk files, .tmp files and index.dat files. Most of you should be ok with this, but there may be some who need these files. If you are one of them, do not follow this step. Post back a reply telling us about this. So if that's ok, then download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode:

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of sysdos.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the sysdos.dll's under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of sysdos.dll then click the kill button. Once you have done that click ok again.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Make SURE that ALL your browsers are closed now. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Save it as "fix.reg" (with quotes intact) to your desktop. Now double click on fix.reg and say Yes to add it to the registry.

Delete these if found:

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. Once it's done, you may click the Close button. When asked if you want to logoff, choose No.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log.
