Hi

I've been attempting to remove a lot of stuff from a friends PC, I think I've got rid of everything but there are still a couple of problems. I tried to run both Housecall and Panda online scanners and neither would finish, both hung in the middle. I also updated her AVG this morning and it said that the PC had to be restarted for the update to work, on restart it still said it needed restarted. I tried uinstalling/reinstalling AVG but still get the same problem. It won't perform updates either saying 'Update unsuccessful'. All of these lead me to believe I'm missing something. I've ran Search and Destroy, CWS, CCleaner, Adaware and thought I'd got everything off (have also done all the windows updates) and installed Spyware Blaster. However I'm not so sure with these problems that still seem to be there. Here's the log and thanks in advance for taking a look:

I see no firewall running, so I'm guessing the Windows Firewall is up (or maybe a hardware firewall? )

Could this be blocking the attempts you made to update AVG?

Your log looks clean enough, but that doesn't always mean the computer is clean.

You can also try the online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thanks for your help, I've done that and it all looks okay. Can't think what's gone wrong with AVG and why the Panda Scan and Housecall wouldn't work, here's the result:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KASPERSKY ANTI-VIRUS WEB SCANNER REPORT
Thursday, July 28, 2005 14:57:25
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner version: 5.0.67.0
Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 28/07/2005
Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 132466
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan Settings:
Scan using the following antivirus database: standard
Scan Archives: true
Scan Mail Bases: true

Scan Target - My Computer:
A:\
C:\
D:\
E:\

Scan Statistics:
Total number of scanned objects: 34865
Number of viruses found: 0
Number of infected objects: 0
Number of suspicious objects: 0
Duration of the scan process: 1555 sec
No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN.

Scan process completed.

I'm not sure how to proceed with the AVG problem at all, the XP Firewall is up and has always been up. AVG seemed to work before (although it always needed the PC to be restarted to accept the update). Now I can't get it to update at all as it seems to detect an unfinished update which it keeps telling me has been unsuccessful, even if I uninstall/reinstall, I guess I'll have to find an AVG forum.

Thanks for your help!

One thing that's worth checking.

Some malware alters your hosts file so that it is impossible to connect to security related sites.

It would add entries like 127.0.0.1 www.grisoft.com

Look here for a good hosts file and some info:

Oh Dear, I actually found the solution on Grisofts site....this is what I did and it's all okay but thanks for the tip, I'm sure this won't be the last PC I have to do (part of the burden of working in an IT department :tazz:

This is the solution:

* find and delete the WAIT4SD file, if it is located in the AVG Free folder (ensure that showing hidden files and folders is on
* go to the ...Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7data folder and remove its content
* reboot your PC
* try to update again
