Although I've followed this site for a while and am very careful with my own computing environment, I found this site invaluable while trying to fix computers that friends have passed off to me in hopes I could salvage their systems.

The machine I'm fixing now had over 2,000, yes 3 zeros on the first Microsoft Spyware scan. It had over 64 viruses on the first AVG scan and nearly 20 on a subsequest Ewido scan. Needless to say, this box was in deep trouble.

After many hours and lots of reading from this site, I believe I have it just about licked. I _think_ I resolved the OIN/ Aurora infection, although I can't be positive. The problem I have now is that once I load Internet explorer and type in an address or search word, another entirely separate thread of IE will pop up with some link to an advertisement page. I believe this is the last vestige of what was a thorough infestation.

I have gone through all steps listed on the site and have done multiple scans with the various types of software: Microsoft Spyware, S&D and CW Shredder; AVG, Ewido and Trend Online scan; as well as the steps with Nailfix and safe mode.

Here is my latest HJT log. Please let me know if I'm clean or if that annoying browser thread is indeed the last malware standing.

I knew the "ping.exe" was a problem, but they hid it well. In all programs, the path shows up as 'system32\?ppPing\' but the actual path is 'system32\AppPath' and if you search for ?ppPath you will not get a hit. This was lingering as a sub-process to iexplore and I could not rid myself of it.

Here's the new HJT log, but when I logged onto geekstogo, another thread of IE launched with this URL:

This is the same problem I've been having.

that looks clean now.:tazz:

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE run your anti virus, when you get the all clear
restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point :-

click START\ALL PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS\SYSTEM RESTORE. click on "create new restore point"
click on NEXT and follow the prompts.

this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the nasties reinstalled again.

Then

Go to TOOLS\INTERNET OPTIONS. and delete all TEMP INTERNET FILES

Download CCLEANER


then run the scan under the windows tab.


then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.
