I have tried my best to remove two Trojans affecting my computer using a variety of resources and now admit defeat. :tazz: Would be grateful for the help of the experts...

Norton Antivirus 2005 discovered the following but was unable to repair:-

W32.Desktophijack in c:\windows\new\system32\wininet.dll AND
Trojan.Stwoyle in c:\windows\new\q204804_disk.dll

Following the "You_must_read_this_.." as much as possible I have:-

Installed Spybot S&D and ran it (was successful in removing some problems);
Installed Ewido Security Suite and ran it twice;
Ran the online Trend Housecall scan;
Installed TrojanHunter;
Unable to install XP SP1a;
Reboot - Test
Ran Hijack This

Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download SmitRem.zip
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.
=============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.
Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
    • Follow the prompts on screen.
    • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
    • The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.
  • Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

  • Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

  • Save the Panda scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let me know if any problems persist.

Question?:: I saw no place to check the Autoclean box and wonder if the ActiveScan which shows no disinfected is because I missed this?

Have custody of PC now and so will respond within a hour or so of your reply subject to timezone (I'm UK!)

I should also inform you that I installed Norton Antivirus 2005 on my PC after getting infected.
Whenever Windows starts I see it trying to commence an installation and then an error message comes up saying something like "Norton Antivirus 2005 cannot support the repair function...please uninstall and install again". However I cannot uninstall AV2005 and have temporarily disabled it.
I was wrong in my initial post that my XP hadn't got the SP2 patch...it has
I'm getting lots of malfunctions..."Windows must close down..." etc and I'm trying to install new hardware (a wireless G PCI adaptor) but unable to...I assume this is all related to virus problem?

Hi AndMed! :tazz:

Don't worry about the late reply. Everybody's busy these days and as long as you get back to me within 14 days I still consider your thread current.

Your log looks pretty good, but we still need to fix a few lines.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Did you install SP2 while your computer was infected?
If you did, that can create a lot of the problems that you are describing. SP2 needs to be installed on a clean system.

Let me know about that and post a new hijackthis log.

Dear Buckeye Sam,

No SP2 was installed a long while ago b4 the virus hit. Although I was trying to install some Microsoft undates last night which all failed. There certainly seems to be some problems with Windows Installer and when I try to launch IE or Windows Explorer I've had errors.

I'm going to try again after these latest repairs to see if the problems are gone.

Here's the Hijack This log after repair....

Hi AndMed,

Something new has just appeared in your latest hijackthis log.

Please make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O2 - BHO: AL2Spy Class - {DC200356-0864-4F66-8964-5D43A19300F5} - C:\WINDOWS\NEW\AL2DLL.dll
O9 - Extra button: AutoLogin - {D04AA3F7-DEE7-479B-A153-24E6C36300C0} - C:\WINDOWS\NEW\AL2DLL.dll
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.searchuno.co.uk

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Once in Safe mode, delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

C:\WINDOWS\NEW\AL2DLL.dll
C:\WINDOWS\gendel32.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\nCase
C:\PROGRAM FILES\TV Media
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Windows SyncroAd
C:\WINDOWS\INF\NSUPD9X.INF
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\NSupd9x.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.6.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\games.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ActiveX.inf
C:\WINDOWS\NEW\Downloaded Program Files\pinstall.dll

Delete your temp files
  • Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
    • Open the Temp folder
    • Select Edit -> Select All
    • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
  • Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.
    • Open the Prefetch folder
    • Select Edit -> Select All
    • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
  • Click Start -> Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
    • Select Edit -> Select All
    • Select Edit -> Delete(or press the delete button on your keyboard) to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.
  • Click Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options.
    • Select the General tab
    • Under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
    • Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
    • Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
    • Click Apply then OK.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin.
Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.
I would refrain from installing any Windows updates until we are sure you're clean.

Dear Buckeye Sam,

OK...I did as you said by viewing hidden files but the new HiJack This Log produced just one of the three lines you indicated needing repairing...the O15 - Trusted Zone which was legitimate despite its name but I repaired it anyway. Not sure why those other couple of lines you pointed out weren't there this time?

In safe mode I found just four of the directories on your list (lines 3-6 incl.) which I deleted.

In deleting the temp files there was no 'prefetch' folder.

Your latest log looks clean to me.

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

How are things running on your end?

Dear Buckeye Sam,

Thanks for the final tips on stopping a load of little used software starting up when I first log on...it helped to reduce the time considerably.

BUT

On Monday evening I allowed some automatic Windows updates to be downloaded and upon re-boot the next morning I found I had a PC which crashed during reboot (even in safe mode). So I was unable to even get into the PC.

My friendly computer shop man told me it sounded like taking the PC back to its factory state was the only solution and so I finally called it a day...

I purchased this 'state of the art' Dell Dimension XPS T500 back in Feb99 and with it's 2.4GB hard disk and 256MB RAM I thought it would last me (and I suppose six years is forever in the computer world.

I bought a new tower (Compaq) ex-display for a good price (well in the UK anyway) and so my virus / trojan problems are no more.

Many thanks for all your kind help...I'll be making a small donation for the unselfish giving of your time.

Kind regards
Andrew :tazz:
