Ubuntu rocks :tazz:

Love the open office, etc.

But can't get to my harddrive. It recognizes my USB jump drives, and can read from my cd rom and DVD drives. It doesnt recognize My HP printer which is run over USB, and has a number of slots for USB sticks and other removable media.

Do I have to get a linux driver for the disk? or am I not looking in the right place?
Or is this not a feature of LIve ubuntu?

My hard drive info

Description Disk drive
Manufacturer (Standard disk drives)
Model ST3160021A

Hey EMC guy,

I assume you are running this in the "live CD" mode. Linux (Ubuntu) can only read FAT32 windows partitions and can not access NTFS formatted windows drives. Most Win XP drives are formatted in NTFS. So, if you hard drive is formatted as NTFS, when you run Ubuntu off the Live CD, you will be unable to mount or see the hard drive. When you install Ubunutu, you will need to create a linux partition to install into and some people create a small FAT32 partition in order to allow file sharing/access between Ubuntu and Windows.

I don't know off the top of my head for the HP printer linux drivers, I can look more once I am done at the hospital.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi EMCguy!

Glad to hear you got things running!! How do you like Ubuntu and Gnome? As gust0208 pointed out, the live cd does not like NTFS filesystems, but if you install Ubuntu, you should have no problems reading the NTFS stuff. Writing to it however is another can of worms altogether and not really recommended as data might go away..completely.

I have my machine setup similar to what gust0208 has outlined, but instead of small FAT32, I have a 99Gig partition that is FAT32 and anything that could even remotely have a need to be shared is dumped on that partition. You can read and write no sweat to FAT32.

As for the HP, not 100% sure there, however, I think you may find things change a bit when you install Ubuntu. There is a generic HP print server available for Linux which should work for you after some USB tweaks possibly.

Happy Linux!!
Be well, SD
