Welcome to the Geeks To Go forum.:tazz:

Step 1

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite from here. Install it and update the program with the latest definitions. Setup the program following the instructions here and then close it without running a scan. We'll use it in Safe Mode.

Please download Nailfix from here.
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Step 2

Reboot into Safe Mode and double-click Nailfix.cmd.
A window should open and close very quickly (this is normal).

Step 3

Then please run Ewido security suite, and perform a full system scan.
Remove anything found,

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

* Click Save report
* Save the report to your desktop.
* i'll get you to post it later.

Step 4

Then click on Start | Run and type cleanmgr into the run box.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin ONLY are checkmarked and click 'OK'.
Then click on Start | Run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.
This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses.
Please delete all files that are found there.

Step 5

Run HijackThis again and place a check before the following entries:-

Hi! bricat,

thank so you so much for your reply!

Here are the fresh hijackthis and ewido logs. I am connected to the internet right now and only one pop up window has appeared so far - as opposed to atleast 10-12 that would have come up earlier. So there's definitely improvement.

Below are the logs. It would be fantastic if you could tell me what i should do next. Very much indebted to you!!!

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

that looks clean now.:tazz:

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE run your anti virus, when you get the all clear
restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point :-

click START\ALL PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS\SYSTEM RESTORE. click on "create new restore point"
click on NEXT and follow the prompts.

this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the nasties reinstalled again.

Then

Go to TOOLS\INTERNET OPTIONS. and delete all TEMP INTERNET FILES

Download CCLEANER

then run the scan under the windows tab.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

thats great news! I will do as you say and get back to you. I have downloaded Firefox and am currently using that and facing no problem with pop-up windows. One thing bothers me though - I still have OIN as a program in my Control Panel<Add/Remve Programs. I havent touched it coz I dont want everything to go bad again. Should I just let it be and leave it as it is?

thanks a ton!

Hi! - I did as you said and things seem ok. Regarding OIN, I tried to remove it but it directs me to a website and then asks me to click on a button ' Install OIN installer'...am not sure if I should click on that icon. Should I go ahead?

thanks!!!

Hi! Bricat,

I have not clicked on it. From what I understand, OIN stands for Outerinfo Network and is a kind of spyware. Nope - have never installed Oracle.

My comp is working ok now. But the new problem after carrying out the system restore and defrag tasks is that when i open Yahoo mail and even geeks to go forum in Firefox, the pages are not organized properly. Some of the icons are not displayed and the pages look haphazard. If I open them with Internet explorer, they look ok. I was not facing this problem until yesterday with firefox. But its a minor glitch - I can live with that! am happy ther erae no more pop up windows!

So what should I do regarding that horrid OIN thinggy?

thanks!!!
