Hi. First let me say this seems to be a great site. I have learned so much (probably more than I wanted to :tazz:

) before even posting this post. As you can see by the title I have been hit by the Bloodhound.W32.EP virus. I have followed everything I could in the before you post section. I could not do a system scan via Panda or Trend Micro as it only works with IE and not Firefox.

IE is does not work at all. When I try and launch it I receive an error stating "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The Winsock fix didn't help. I tried loading the SP1a however when I went to execute it it flashed something and closed itself so quick I am not sure it downloaded.

I am using Firefox and whenever I go to Symantec it throws me to Microsft. The URL contains the same path however it replaces symantec.com with microsoft.com. It seems to be preventing me form reaching symantec.

You have a Haxdoor Backdoor Trojan which requires some tools to get rid of.

First, download HDFix from here
After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HDFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.
Next, download CleanUp! Install it, but do not run it yet.
Boot into safe mode: Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
Locate the HDFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hdfix.bat"
A log will be produced which you can close out of.
Then run HijackThis again, close any open windows and browsers and fix these:

I went to the site listed for HDfix and did not see the software in their download section. I searched their website and Googled the web for it and could not find it. Is there another location where I could find it? Thanks.

Sam - Hello. I ran HSfix and CleanUp!. I could not run any of the free online virus scans because I can not get my IE to work. Evertime I click on IE I get a Windows error box saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Please make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

Fix these lines with Hijackthis.

Download KillBox and unzip it to your desktop.

Open Killbox and select the Delete on reboot option.
Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avpx32.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).
A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.
A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Sam, good morning. I followed your last direction. I shutdown and rebooted. Turned NAV on and went to IE. IE works now however almost immediately I got the NAV warning that I had the Bloodhound.W32.EP virus. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL Would you like me to post a new HJT log?

Sam, since I know can run IE I am at Trend Micro running an online scan. I will post results shortly. I also just noticed in the system tray an icon (red circle with a white exclamation point in the middle) and an info ballon pointing to it telling me, "Your computer is infected.!" "Click here to protect your computer from spyware / virus threat." -- I did not click on it.

That's smitfraud. It doesn't show up in your log.

You can skip Trend Micro. It won't help. Post a new hijackthis log for me.

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.

Please download SmitRem.zip
- Save the file to your desktop.
- Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Please download Ewido Security Suite
- Install ewido security suite
- When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  - Install background guard
  - Install scan via context menu
- Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
- You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  - On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  - Then click on Start Update.
- The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
- Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido Manual Updates
Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.
Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
- Follow the prompts on screen.
- Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
- The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.
Run Ewido:
- Click on scanner
- Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
- During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
- When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
- When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
- Save the report to your desktop.
- Close Ewido.
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the Panda scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
