During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
FxIstBar.exe
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.


2. Remove Infections

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run FxIstBar.exe and let it fix anything it finds.

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

GMT
Media Access


Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

Folders
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network

C:\Program Files\Power Scan

Thanks a lot for your help Tampabelle! Sorry for taking so long with a reply I was out of town a couple days.

Well i did what you told me to the best of my ability. However, there were a couple things that i was unable to find in hijackthis. Approximately 6/23 items were not on the list. But here's my new scan.. please tell me if there's more things for me to remove. oh and, of course, there is also the Ewido report. Thanks again in advance.

I seem to have overlooked it before that you dont have Service Pack 1 installed.

Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

thanks tampabelle.. the link directs me to install service pack 2. however when i'm halfway through the installation this is the message i get: the product key used to install microsoft windows may not be valid. do you have any suggestions as to what i should do? thanks.

ugh i guess i'm unable to install the service pack 2 because i have an invalid product key. apparantly windows xp was installed onto my comp by a friend of mine a year ago and i guess it was not genuine. My comp previously had windows ME and desperately needed a reformatting of the c-drive. he installed xp for me as well. im sorry for the trouble, but do you have any further suggestions?
