Hi, I have followed your instructions to remove malware using CleanUp, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Ewido. Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Ewido can't remove what I suspect is the same malware. BTIEN, HuntBar, and an additional one found by Ewido called AltEvents. There is always an error when any of these programs try to remove the infections.

Please help. Here is my log.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi Tampabelle, I'm having problems at step one already. When I try to install SP1a, toward the end it gives me an error, Service Pack 1 Setup: access denied, and says that the installation did not complete, and to select either OK to undo changes, or Cancel to quit (partially updated).

Do I need to post in a different forum for this?

Hi Elaine,

Lets try this -

*Please go here (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer ( not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
*Click on "Windows Validation Assistant"
*Click on the "Validate Now" button.
*Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
*Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
*Enter your product key then click "continue"
*When it says "Validation Complete" please click "Continue to return to your previous activity"
*Copy what it says and paste it here.

Tampabelle,

This is what Windows Validation Assistant reported:

Thank you for running the Windows Validation Assistant. It appears that your Windows Product Key is valid.

This is a strong indicator that your operating system is genuine, however the Windows Validation Assistant cannot make a final determination.

To verify that you received a genuine Certificate of Authenticity and software CD, compare your anti-piracy features in the next section.

Hello!

Tampabelle had to go out of town for a few days, and he asked me to help you while he is gone. My name is Justin, lets see if we can get SP1a installed!

Download Service Pack 1a from download.com here

Once downloaded, try installing it.

Let me know if it works :tazz:

Hi Justin,

SP1a is only partially installed. :tazz:
I rebooted the computer, and so far it hasn't crashed or done anything else drastic.
Properties show Service Pack 1 under system information.

Is this bad?

Hiya! it looks like SP1a was successfully installs. So lets get to work on removing this stuff!

Please reopen HiJackThis and scan your computer. Please place a check mark next to the following entries. Be sure to select only the entries that are listed below, as deleting the wrong file could cause harm to your system.

O2 - BHO: RichEditor Class - {F79A2C4B-8776-4ED7-8B2F-4786A4A3500A} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\richedtr.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvdsvc32.exe ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvdsvc32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSof1] C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [exp.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [17ug7hn6] C:\WINDOWS\System32\17ug7hn6.exe

Next, please close all programs except for HiJackThis, and select Fix Checked.
Reboot your computer and boot into safe mode.

To boot into safe mode turn your computer on and press f8, continiously, until a menu appears. At this menu please select safemode

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
