Hello!

Lets delete some files that Active Scan could not get.

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

4) Select "Delete on Reboot".

5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\Program Files\CMAPP\Client\cmappmf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bose.ico
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QBUninstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.ini
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Aprps
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SahImages
C:\HJT\backups\backup-20050803-132718-513.dll
C:\Program Files\Aprps\ProxyStub.dll
C:\Program Files\CMAPP\Client\cmappmf.dll
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{557B1F1A-ECE8-4495-8F45-44B99E92DF7D}\RP34\A0017450.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system\QBUninstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\InstallerV3.exe
6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot, and post a new HiJackThis log, as well as how your computer is running.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for all your help so far.

The good:
No more links on every single "the" at each website I visit. Definitely fewer popups.

The bad:
My homepage is set to news.yahoo.com. I don't know if that triggers a popup occasionally, because the popup links to store.yahoo.com.

Here's my HJT log:

Hi Justin,

There are some pop-ups, but not as bad as before. I ran Panda ActiveScan again, and it found more spyware. I ran Killbox in safe mode, and got rid of those files on reboot. There is a spyware registry key that refuses to be deleted, Ad-Aware can't get rid of it, Panda can't, SpyBot can't. It's called BTIEIN. How can I get rid of it?

BTW, thanks for all your help so far!!

Hello!

If you look under Add Remove Programs, do you see something in there called Huntbar or Ibis toolbar? If so, Remove them and delete the folder:

c:\program files\Huntbar
c:\program files\Ibis Toolbat

They should be somewhat close to the paths above. The folder names might not be identical.

Hi Justin,

Nope, there are no program folders in Add Remove Programs that remotely resemble Huntbar or Ibis ...

Where could they be hiding? :tazz:

Hello!

Run PandaScan again, but save the log, and then post it for me the look at. That way I can see what file it says is infected with BTIEIN. :tazz:

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start tapping press F8 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now open ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Post back with the Ewido Log.

Hello!

Copy everything in the code box below(starting with RegEdit4) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As..." and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as regfix.reg on your desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN\BTIEIN]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN\BTIEIN\taskcache]

Then Double Click on RegFix.reg on your desktop, and when asked if you want to merge into the registry, click yes.

Next, please go here

And download the Vundo Removal Tool, and follow the directions on that website for removing the trojan.

Finally, run PandaScan again and post the log for me to look at.

Justin,

I don't think it worked. Followed your instructions to add regfix to the registry. Symantec didn't find the Vundo trojan. Here is the Panda log:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/consumeralertsystemNo disinfected Windows Registry
I think it's the same as last time. :tazz: ;)
What should I do?

Hello!

I am not worried about that entry right now, as it does not have a registry key. Can you post a new HiJackThis log, and I can take a look and make sure nothing is hiding from us :tazz:

Also, I will need an export of a key in your registry.

Click Start
Click Run
Type regedit /e c:\RegExport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ATLEvents.ATLEvents"

Click OK

Navigate to c:\RegExport and post the contents as a reply.

Hi Justin,

That's odd. I can't export the registry key, I tried running regedit /e c:\RegExport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ATLEvents.ATLEvents", but nothing happened. I ran regedit, and tried exporting it from there. It told me that the key does not exist.

Anyway, here's my HJT log:

Hello!

That is actually good that the key does not exist, it means you do not have vundo any more!

Your HiJackThis log is Clean!

Are you still noticing any problems?
