I hope you can be my hero on this little bugger, I recently have been getting little warnings from my McAfee Virus Scan program about Wininet.dll being infected with the w32/alemod.a.dll virus, and that it cannot be deleted nor cleaned. After typing it into the google.com search, I found that this probably shouldn't be something to ignore. I've yet to -notice- any problems, other then warnings when I open MSN Instant Messenger until today, when I saw that my system32 folder wasn't showing up in the c:\winnt\ directory. I opened up internet explorer, and manually opened this folder by typing in the full extension c:\winnt\system32\, so I know that it is there, which makes me assume that this is part of the virus. Doing a search of my computer for wininet.dll only showed it to be located in C:\winnt\servicepackfiles\i386\. I did find the file in the system32 folder however while doing my manual search, and just clicking on the file brought up more warnings with McAfee (similar to the ones I was getting earlier). Next I scanned each file separately, to see if both were infected. I was only able to use McAfee for this test, as no virus scan program I have will look in the system32 folder (it simply doesn't appear in the winnt directory), I was only able to search this file by right-clicking and telling it to -scan for virus-. The results of this quick test showed that only the file in the system32 folder was infected, according to a fully updated McAfee Virus Scan (as of July 29, 2005).

The programs I have run (most of which in safe-mode) are ...

- HijackThis -
Noticed nothing that looked irregular, I have read a few posts about this virus before posting myself, and had none of the files that were suggested to be checked and fixed, so I didn't actually have to fix anything using this virus.

- CWShredder -
This detected nothing wrong with my computer.

- Ewido Security Suite (trial version) -
This detected nothing wrong with my computer.

- CCleaner -
This cleaned up a bit, but did nothing to resolve my issues.

- Search & Destroy -
This detected nothing wrong with my computer.

- Ad-aware 6 -
This detected nothing wrong with my computer.

--- I am at a loss of what to do, here is my HijackThis report. Thank you for the time. ---

Welcome to GTG.

Download smitRem.zip at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.
Unzip the file to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {FE0CE8FF-C484-4DB6-A3C3-D7E500917987} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {FE0CE8FF-C484-4DB6-A3C3-D7E500917987} - (no file) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {39B0684F-D7BF-4743-B050-FDC3F48F7E3B} (FilePlanet Download Control Class) - http://www.fileplane...DC_1_0_0_44.cab

Open the smitRem folder and double click on the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido log (if you ran it).

I was unable to follow the step...

"Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present."

I went to control panel, display, but there is no desktop tab (there is background/screensaver/appearance/settings) on the display properties window. I checked all the tabs, and found nothing that branched off into a customize desktop either, let alone a security info option.

During the full system scan of http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm the w32/alemod.a.dll virus was detected and could not be cleaned by McAfee Virus scan.

The PandaActiveScan found no viruses.

Did you allow that RunThis.bat file to finish up? That log looks incomplete.

OK, boot into Safe Mode and run that RunThis.bat file again. Wait till it's done (window will close by itself).

Restart and post the whole smitRem log in the forum. Also give me a new HijackThis log.

What is the filename and location of the file infected with the w32/alemod.a.dll virus? You have to tell me what Panda found otherwise I can't locate that file myself.

I feel dumb, sorry! I was running runthis.bat out of the zip folder! I put it on my desktop and it did a lot more then before. (It found my virus!)

The file was c:\winnt\system32\wininet.dll

As for the system32 folder, I discovered that I was simply hiding important system folders, once I unchecked it the folder appeared.

As for the panda scan, I tried to run it again, but it wouldn't run. I never saw where I could get a log for it, and when I did run it, it found nothing. I will try again tomorrow (it is a sloow process for my computer, multiple hours)

That's ok. If Panda didn't find anything, we don't need the log.

That wininet.dll file is really legitimate. Only in this case it was infected. But it's fixed now :tazz:

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
