My problem involves the anti-virus/spyware programs I use: Noton Personal Firewall, AVG anti-virus, and Microsoft anti spyware. All of the programs seem to be working fine, however when I try to use the in-app updating utility for AVG it gives you that error popup about everything that could be wrong with your connection, although I'm sure that I have a steady connection up and running. Norton, on the other hand "pretends" to update although I'm almost positive I have out of date definitions. Norton also says that it cannot find an internet connection when I click the "Outbreak Alert" tab. Well, Microsoft [Grisoft] anti-spyware just doesn't find anything, when Ad-aware seems to pick up on even registry problems. So my question is, does this look like a hacked anti-virus suite? Or am I just paranoid. I've also experienced some wierd massive slowdown sessions when I try to open IE right after a re-boot. My sister also said that "the computer wouldn't shut down once". I'm behind a router if that matters.

Also, in the sticky, the word "every" in the second sentence should be changed to "ever" :tazz:

OK, it seems that AVG was actually just being blocked by my firewall so that takes care of that. MAS is doing something as I noticed it comes up with these warning popups but only in other people's accounts for some reason, so thats nothing to worry about. Still those other two unusual happenings still have me worried. I just need the reassurance of someone here telling me I have a clean log :tazz: Thanks!

Hi, zxSolidSnakexz,

You seem to be running both Norton and AVG. It is advisable to run only one in realtime. Running two uses a lot of resources and can cause conflicts. The two antiviruses will consume tremendous resources slowing your computer down to snail's pace and maybe causing it to hang/freeze frequently, sometimes even at startup itself. I suggest that you disable or remove one, and leave the other for reatime protection. If you are unsure whether NAV is updated, disable that one. Symantec can give you instructions regarding its complete removal because that must be done according to their sepcific recommendations.

There are just two entries in your log that you can fix.

First you will need to disable Microsoft AntiSpyware because its protective features tht prevent bad changes to the Registry can also prevent good changes.
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Launch HJT and tick these:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
Close all browsers and windows except for HJT and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

Download: CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
or
http://www.filehippo...d_ccleaner.html

Once installed, launch CCleaner:
Using the default settings, click Run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit (top right) (reboot).

That should do it for your account. If there are other users' accounts on there, it would be a good idea to have logs from those accounts checked as well.
Feel free to post a log from another account if you would like me to check.

Thanks for the help, sorry for my delayed reply.
I'm lookin all over the place but I can't seem to findhow to stop AVG from starting up except by msconfig. Speaking of msconfig i didn't read the entire sticky and now I realize i should restart in normal and give you a complete HJT log. So I'm going to remove those items and restart. As for CleanUp! I run it regularly :tazz: . Thanks again!

This log is clean, however both AV's are still in your Running Processes.

If there is another user account that you would like me to check, please post a log from that account. Thanks.

Otherwise, you are good to go.

You have done a good job keeping your computer malware-free.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs....ontent/home.jsp is free.
Also Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft....ftware/adaware/

b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-network...2005-05-31.html
http://www.majorgeek...wnload2471.html
http://security.koll...n&page=download
I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Adaware frequently.
I scan with each at least weekly.

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewa...-test-guide.htm

8. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

9. After you use Windows XP for some time, the prefetch folder can get full of rarely used or obsolete links which can slow down your computer boot time noticeably. We recommend you delete all files in this folder about once a month.
To find the prefetch folder, enter this in the explorer address bar:
%windir%\prefetch
This should take you to either C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH or C:\WINNT\PREFETCH. Delete all the files there. http://www.hexff.com/xp_tuneup.php

10. You might want to take a look at this article, too.

I personally use firefox, but others in my family aren't so quick to adopt.
Either way, I am currently in the process of getting complete HJT logs from the five accounts on my computer (don't worry they should be as clean as the previous one). Once I have that done I'll post them here. Thanks for the help so far :tazz: .

You're welcome. We'll check one at a time, and hopefully they will be clean.
I'll check back later. :tazz:

Hi, sorry for taking so long. I was away all last week and now I finally got the chance to go on each account. Here's the other four, they are very similar.

Hi, zxSolidSnakexz,
The other user accounts appear to be clean. :tazz:
I'm still concerned about your running 2 antivirus programs. They not only use resources, but they can conflict.
Good choice to use Firefox. I love it and it has some cool extensions.

As long as your system is clean, if you have not done so already, you might want to flush System Restore and create a clean Restore Point:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

You already have my preventions tips, so you should be in good shape now.
Happy and Safe Surfing :)

Yeah, I actually looked all through the settings of AVG and can't figure out how to turn off the startup items. Should I just disable them through MSconfig?

I just created a clean restore point but I'm glad I didn't do that a couple days ago I recently used the restore wizard to recover all the pictures from my didgital camera :tazz:. (before running the HJT)
