Hi there. I've followed everything in the preparation section including running ewido. Prior to starting on this course I'd also done a full XP reinstall/repair as well as tried several other tools and resources but so far - nothing has been able to stop the loadingwebsite.com and paypopup.com ads. Ocassionally having hassles with the winlogon.exe fatal (blue screen) error as well as I've seen mentioned in other threads.

Uninstall SpywareNuker and Web Rebates via the Add/Remove panel.

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Make sure you give me the above log file first before proceeding any further.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry I did jump the gun a little and had been uninstalling things whilst waiting for further instructions. The only trace I could find of WebRebates on my system was in the HiJackThis log so I had it removed from there.

I had already run the L2MFix prior to removing Spyware Nuker.

The HijackThis log looks good

Just give me that L2MFix (option #2) log. It doesn't look like you let the second scan of L2MFix finish. Run L2MFix again and choose option #4 this time. Now run L2MFix again and choose option #2. Let it finish first (the window will close). Next run it again and choose option #1. Then post those two logs here.

There was something wrong in the log there, so I had to make you run those again

I noticed myself that the second log seemed to be a tad on the smallish side

Anyway, I followed your instructions and ran option #4 which displayed a couple of WinLogon Notify entries. I then ran option #2 and did the reboot, etc.

On the reboot, I waited until everything had completely loaded, etc. but didn't receive a log. However, I had ewido popping up with a suspected infection as follows:

cputil.dll
c:\windows\system32
Spyware.Look2Me

I used the "clean" option and thought the l2mfix might finish after that, but still no log.

So - I haven't gone back and done option #1 yet :S

In case it's of any value to you - I do have the system set up for multi-user, so it doesn't reboot directly into an account, it reboots to the Logon screen from where I select the account to open. Of course, I've been doing all this on the same account, but perhaps there's something preventing l2mfix from properly completing.

Try running option #2 again. Then run #1.

If that still fails, just give me option #1 log. At least the winlogon problem is fixed. But I think you still have the infection since Ewido caught it.

If you can, disable Ewido from running at startup. Then run L2MFix again. Choose option #4 first. Then run it again and choose option #2.

See if it will give you a log this time around (with Ewido disabled from startup).

Either way, tell me what happened and give me a new HijackThis log also.

but i was thinking - would directly running the "second.bat" from l2mfix after reboot perform the same functions and give you the same log? It looked like that was what it was supposed to do after reboot.
