Hi, Dave,

Yes, you still have a critter in there. :tazz:

Please print these steps. They must be followed exactly.

First of all, please disable Spybot's TeaTimer and Microsoft Antispyware until we are ENTIRELY finished with our fix, and I have confirmed that your system is
is clean. The Registry monitoring features of both that prevent bad changes can also prevent GOOD changes.

To disable TeaTimer:
1. Open Spybot
2. Click Mode -> Advanced Mode
3. Click Yes
4. Click Tools (located in the bottom left corner) -> Resident
5. Uncheck 'Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active'
6. Then close Spybot and restart your computer
After cleaning your system reverse these steps and re-enable the protection applets for TeaTimer -->** Do not do this until I have confirmed that your system is clean.

To disable MSAS:
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Finally, right-click on the MSAS icon in the system tray and select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware".
Reboot.
[After your system is fully cleaned reenable MSAS using the same steps but this time reverse them.]

Now for the first step of our fix:

Please download shadowwar's L2MFix from here:
http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to the desktop and double-click on l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the new l2mfix folder on your desktop.
Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer. After a minute or so, Notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I followed your instructions exactly as written :tazz:
However - when I ran l2mfix.exe I did get a a cmd error:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose "Close" to terminate the applciations.

L2mfix.exe did generate a logfile enclosed below. I'll wait until your next instructions before doing anything. Thanks - Dave

Just to make sure everything is cool, let's try that again.
**If you get any error messages for CMD or Autoexec.bat>> Select Option 5 from the l2mfix and once at the site, click on the link that applies to your Operating System!

Double Click the file it downloads and Extract the files to its predetermined System32 folder.
Then try again:
Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer. After a minute or so, Notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

As I mentioned before.... IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Based on the log, we will determine the next steps. Please DO NOT REBOOT after scanning for these logs!! Otherwise potential problems may mutate and spread. Wait for me to get back to you with the next steps. Good luck!

ok - ran it again on option #1 - got the same error message. Ran option 5, downloaded for XP Pro - extracted to system32, then ran option #1 again. This time, no error message. Here's the log:

Super! :tazz:

Please close any programs running since this fix will restart your computer.

Open the l2mfix folder on your desktop and double-click on l2mfix.bat.
Select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.
Allow L2MFix to restart your computer. Your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer.
When it is finished, Notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread. Please also post a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

ok - ran option #2 - too many messages to keep up after reboot. several winlogoff, several file not matching, nothing to do *.ini. Means nothing to me.

Anyway, everyting seemed to work towards a successful conclusion. here's the log l2 log followed by the hijack log.

We're getting there...

Now scan with HJT and if you do not know what this tick this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [11pt verdana; color:FF] C:\WINDOWS\system32\11pt verdana; color:FF

Close all windows and click "Fix Checked."

Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders

Delete the specified:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\11pt verdana; color:FF

REBOOT. Please post a fresh log and let me know how things are running.

If all is well, we'll create a clean Restore Point, but I want to check your next log first.

Is that exactly how it is spelled?
Maybe it would be a good idea to get an online scan at Panda.
It could take a while, so you might want to wait until tomorrow.
Panda: http://www.pandasoft...com/activescan/
Be sure to put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

Panda Details:
Click on "Scan your PC"
A box will pop-up, click "Next"; Then, type in your email address and click "Send"
Select your Country and State/Region. Click "Start"
A message may appear asking you to agree to the installation of ActiveX components on your system, click "Yes".
Please make sure all five options are checked and then click "All my computer"
Another box will pop-up, click "Close". Your scan should then begin.
When it is finished, please click "See Report" then click "Save Report"
Please post the contents of the saved file.

I'll check it tomorrow. It's late at my house now!

Hi There -
Thought we were done - but....
Enclosed is the Panda log. Much listed although I think it's backup's from other scans. Also noted it dissenfected only 1 file. I've also included a new hjt log just for grins :tazz:

The system has been rebooted once since last night. Nothing to note in the tskmgr. I'll let you decide what to do next.

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, you are correct-- mostly backups...

Your log is clean, nevertheless, there is still some "dust" in there.
Please disable MSAS again until you are finished with the scans below.

Please make sure your Spybot is updated and run a scan. Reboot.

If you do not have Ad-aware please download it. If you have it, update and run a scan in Safemode:

Ad-aware *
Download Ad-aware version SE Personal 1.06 from here:
Download from:
http://www.download....4-10045910.html
http://www.majorgeek...ownload506.html
Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.
Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
Click the 'Connect'-button and, if there are new updates, click 'OK' and then 'Finish'.
Once the definitions have been updated:
Do NOT scan with the program yet.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by immediately tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Once in Safe Mode, launch Ad-Aware, and press Start > Next to let it scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Press 'Next'
Right-click in that results pane and choose "select all"
Press "Next" again
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.
Finally, close Ad-Aware, and start your computer normally.

Download: CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Once installed, run CCleaner:
Click the Windows tab

Select the following:
Internet Explorer:
Temp Internet
History
Recently Typed URLs
Delete Index.dat files

System:
Empty Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Memory Dumps
Chkdsk File Fragments
Old Prefetch Data

Next: Click Options. Click Advanced .
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.". Click OK.

UNCHECK all other defaults listed on the:
Issues and Applications tabs.

Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit (reboot)

Then you should be good to go. ;)

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs....ontent/home.jsp is free.
Also Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Adaware frequently.
I scan with each at least weekly.

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewa...-test-guide.htm

8. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

9. After you use Windows XP for some time, the prefetch folder can get full of rarely used or obsolete links which can slow down your computer boot time noticeably. We recommend you delete all files in this folder about once a month.
To find the prefetch folder, enter this in the explorer address bar:
%windir%\prefetch
This should take you to either C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH or C:\WINNT\PREFETCH. Delete all the files there. http://www.hexff.com/xp_tuneup.php

10. You might want to take a look at this article, too.
