Hello again Helen

1. No display properties tabs (All Users)

2. No screensaver and password protection (2 Users)

The password/scrensaver problem doesn’t sound malware related, although it might be, but the display tabs does. I will try to fix that next.

Results of HJT logs:

First User – clean

Second User – clean

Third User – clean

Fourth User – clean

The display behaviour sounds like Smitfraud, so let’s try the fix and see what happens. I suggest you log on as the main user.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let me know if any problems persist.

Hello Phil, Thank you so much for your continuing help. It's really good news that the HJT logs are showing all users are clean.

Just to let you know some more information before I tell you what's happened with your last instructions.

1. Unfortunately the problem still exists.
a. On all users - Display tabs not visible.

BUT, the themes page, without a tab is showing. If I change the theme (it doesn't matter what I choose) and press Apply my pc says "Please Wait"and the screen freezes for a few seconds. When the theme changes, the tabs are all up on the Display Properties box!!

Does this mean that the whatever makes the tabs appear is on my pc but for some reason doesn't work when Display Properties is first opened?

2. On one user only the screensaver is not working and the 'on resume .. ' is greyed out. The screensaver and the 'on resume..' works with the other 2 users.

When I follow the above and get the screensaver tab and click on it. The screensaver selected appears in the Windows Task Manager. When I click on another tab or press apply, it disappears from the Task Manager.

I don't understand why any of the above happens, but I'm trying to give you as much information as possible so that perhaps you can understand what's happening!!

3. I've deleted User 3 completely. Just got 3 users now!

Ok, I think that's all the background information. Now to your instructions ...

smitRem (run in SafeMode user 1)

Panda ActiveScan

This is causing me all sorts of problems
I have downloaded the ActiveX but it gets to the page 'Select a device to Scan'
and I get an IE error this is the Error signature

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mshtml.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2668 Offset: 0021dc53

So I'm sorry I haven't been able to do a Panda ActiveScan.

Hello again Helen

Firstly I am glad to see a negative for the Smitfraud infection, which is often the cause of display problems, but it does leave us in the dark as to the possible cause of lack of Display Property tabs (I assume that to be the problem if I am understanding you correctly).

Your HJT log continues to be clean.

I would be inclined to either ditch M/Soft Internet Explorer and switch to Mozilla Firefox which is much safer or I would repair MSIE. You do this by going to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS(not my spelling), highlight MSIE and click remove, a window will open with the option to REPAIR.

We could try a registry hack, can't do any harm.

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as FixDesktop.reg and save it on your Desktop. Make sure that under File Types in the save dialogue box it says "All".

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Locate FixDesktop.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will ask you for confirmation and then tell you that it was done.

Once that is finished, please reboot your computer and try to change your background.

Hello Phil

I'm sorry, I wish I had good news. But things just seem to be getting worse. I am wondering if its a hardware rather than a malware problem.

Anyway, unfortunately the original problems with Display Properties tabs abd Screensaver are not fixed.

I don't understand why the tabs on Display Properties can appear in SafeMode and when I 'Apply' a new theme, but don't appear when I originally open the Display Properties window.

I also don't understand why the screensaver works perfectly with 2 users but not on my login.

And now I have more problems

9 times out of 10 when I restart my pc this appears

svchost.exe error 0x7C9105f8 0x000000010
The memory could not be "read"

And I also often have a Generic Host Process for Win32 services error

I did try to save the information from this one but my pc froze and I had to switch it off with the on/off button.

Here's my latest HJT log

I don't know where to go with this now.

I think probably I need to recheck the other users.

The malware scans available as downloads and online don't seem to be very consistant at finding malware and they take so so long to complete a scan. Over the next few days I will try scanning every user.

Perhaps you can suggest what my next move should be.

Thank you so much, Phil, for all your help, patience and support. You're a star! :tazz:

Hello again Helen

Your HJT log remains clean, and I'm sorry that the reg. hacks didn't work.

This is just a suggestion to you, after considering all that ails you.

Remove all users bar one, do that by deleting the users in the control panel>User Accounts. Each user will have their own folder generated and left on the desktop. They will NOT lose anything.

Next, send me a HJT log for the only user left.

Run System File Checker to compare your system files against those on your Windows installation CD, and repair any that are corrupted.

Implement any changes required by HJT and an on-line scan,

Re-institute all previous users.

If you still have problems then, I will transfer you to the appropriate forum and get you a helper.

Have a think and let me know what you decide.

Hello Phil

I am been thinking along similar lines to you. I have been looking into my problems myself. There is a program I would like to run called, I think, Windows File Protection. There's just one major problem.

I have a HP Pavilion with OEM Windows XP. For some inexplicable reason they hid the Windows files somewhere on the C Drive and didn't supply a disk.

(I even had a problem recently with a Windows Update which needed me to verify the Windows program. No disk = No Program Key!) I ended up having to phone Microsoft. Who thankfully did fix the problem.)

I have read on another forum that there is a way around this. But it seemed very complicated.

I don't know if there is anyone who would 'hold my hand' through this and give me all the support that you have.

The other possibility that I'm thinking about is to use HP Restore. But that will presumably revert my pc to how it was nearly 4 years ago, when it was bought. I know I shouldn't lose any data but all the Windows Updates and program changes!!!!

If the svchost and Generic error messages keep occuring I think I will have to do something.

I'm just wondering if my pc is just 'old' and perhaps I need to buy a new one!

Can I come back to the forum in a few days when I've had chance to think about everything?

Once again, Phil, thank you so so much for all your help and patience and support. I am sorry I don't know anything about your illness but I hope today has been one of your 'good' days and that you will have many many more in the future.

Thank you very much,

Helen

Hello again Helen

You are correct with the restore possibility; it will take your system back but you will keep all of your data.

The biggest part of my suggestion that I think is eminently sensible is the process of getting back to a single identity PC, with personal folders, cleaning the PC, and then reverting to a multiple identity PC again. The inconvenience would only be a temporary hiatus.

I certainly wouldn't think that your PC is old enough to warrant replacement. I have three PC's aged between 1998 and 2003, and they are all good for their use.

Thank you for your kind wishes on my illness. Today has been good, thankfully, but even on a good day I have constant loud tinnitus, suffer from deafness and have some balance problems.

Hello Phil

Well some good news, my Display tabs are back and so is my screensaver!!!! YAY!!

I did as you suggested and deleted all users except one.

I then followed the solution on this thread http://www.geekstogo...t49988-s15.html

And it worked!

For the screensaver problem, I backed up the registry and then deleted anything I could find relating to a screensaver.

This worked even without a reboot!

And I've put another user back on, as a test, and everything seemed fine.

I have pm Drnads to thank him or her. I find it strange that we both had the same problem, at the same time and we were both relatively free of malware. But the problem seems fixed now, although only time will tell on the intermitent freezing IE windows. This has taken too much of your and my time already, so I'm not going to give it too much thought in the future!

The svchost and Generic Host Process errors haven't appeared on start up this morning.

If they do come back I would really like one of the experts on this forum to 'decipher' the message for me. If I get the message again, which is the best section of the forum to post a copy of it in?

Here's my latest HJT log just to 'complete the picture' I hopeit's still clean.

Thank you so much Phil, for all your help, support and patience.

I wish you all the best for the future. I like nothing better than when the house is empty and totally quiet. I can't imagine how distressing it must be for you with you illness.

Thank you again,

Helen

Hello Helen

Well I thought it might be a cure, it often is. Multiple identity PC's are a nighmare. If one of the users gets a registry change, it can influence all users. It is therefore only logical that by getting rid of all but one, gives you a better chance of correcting that one only and then start again fresh.

Your log is squeaky clean. :tazz:

Happy safe surfing to you all.
