I am trying to remove a trojan virus from my pc and Trojan Hunter has picked up the following:

"Found possible trojan file: C:\WINNT\system32\ecretrver.exe (Suspicious: UPX-packed file in Windows System folder)"

Can anyone tell me whether this is a trojan file or not? I had 3 trojan viruses all in all in the past 2 weeks. I have now upgraded my firewall and updated my anti-virus software (that'll teach me for not keeping it uptodate!) Phew.....so please any help would be appreciated! :tazz:

Welcome to GTG.

Do not create new topics if they are for the same computer. I will merge it with your other topic.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,xpjava.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AERVICESN] C:\WINNT\Abero\Winp\AERVICESN.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B5760B04-A97C-42B0-AF38-CA9C434214A9}: NameServer = 69.50.188.180 85.255.112.5
O23 - Service: stchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\stchost.exe (file missing)

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

xpjava.exe
C:\WINNT\Abero\
C:\WINNT\stchost.exe

Run a new HijackThis scan immediately. Save the log file and post it here. DO NOT restart or shutdown your computer yet. I want to take a look at the new log to see how it looks like first. Also run these two scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Hi, I have followed your instructions to the letter. The trendmicro and panda PC scan showed no viruses. The virus must have created the Abero folder within Winnt (which you instructed me to remove) - are you familiar with this type of virus (I am quite interested in learning more)?. Any further information that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. As requested please find my hijackthis log file:

Just wondering, did you restart or shutdown during this time? Just want to see if restarting or shutting down is a factor here :tazz:

You may shutdown or restart if you wish now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for stchost.exe (moto) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B5760B04-A97C-42B0-AF38-CA9C434214A9}: NameServer = 69.50.188.180 85.255.112.5
O23 - Service: stchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\stchost.exe (file missing)

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi again, I didnt restart my PC whilst in the middle of following your previous instructions, but have done so afterwards. Once again, I have followed your instructions and disabled stchost (it didnt mention "moto" next to it), but I disabled it. When I ran Hijack this I found:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B5760B04-A97C-42B0-AF38-CA9C434214A9}: NameServer = 69.50.188.180 85.255.112.5

And couldnt find:
O23 - Service: stchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\stchost.exe (file missing)

Please make sure that Word Wrap is turned OFF in Notepad next time before you post your HijackThis log. Take a look at the log you posted. Hard to read? So make sure you turn off Word Wrap next time ;)

Phew... Man was that hard to read through :tazz:

OK, I think I got it all there :)

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
