Hey ALL! This is my FIRST time here and need some help if anyone cna provide it
I was told to post a topic here from one of the HIT staffers so here it goes....thanks in advance to anyone and all that can assist me!!!!!

Hello there,
I am hoping you can help me. I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable person when it comes to computers and what have you. However, I came across the above virus on my Grandmothers computer and have found myself stuck between a rock and a hard place in getting rid of this. I did a web search and found this forum and actually found a post made by Chuck Maass and found no other info, saying it was closed and to PM you..I am at a loss as to what to do here. I have tried to load the computer normally. There are two names on the account. NONE are passsword protected and both are Administrator Account settings. The first one, we'll call UserA, when you try to log on that person, Windows "death-blue" shows up with the error message saying what Chuck Maass's did. THen, the second, we'll call UserB, I try to get into it, and it gets as far as loading the "farm-hillside" background and nothing else. It just sits there. I have used the CTL ALT DEL key on both UserA and UserB's account and tried running a new task and running the explorer to which it says that it cannot be found make sure you typed it correctly, blah blah blah SO then I try to see if I can run other taks and apparently I can do this so I tried doing the steps you posted before. I was able to copy it to it's on the infected computer and run it. It ran before, but now it's currently crashed ok..it's working again. I am posting the LOG FILES of my scans here. When I use safe mode in Admin, UserA, and UserB, I get nothing but blank screens. I have also used Spyware, and Nortons Emergency Virus repair but when it scanned it said no virus's were found and I am still getting this annoying blue screen and can't do anything. I don't know if there is anything that can be done but I would really appreciate it. Thanks again in advance. HERE are four scans.two from UserA and two from UserB. When I was in normal mode, UserB did not receive the BLUE screen message.

Hi Guppy

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Click here
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.
Just post a 'user A' and I'll have a look.

Hello there g2i2r4...sorry for the delay.

OK, I have installed service pack 2 and updated everything from windows update and ran Spy sweeper from webroot...found alot of stuff there. BEFORE I ran the spy sweeper and such, I couldn't even get to the internet....I couldn't get to it when I went to run a new task using the task manager...it said it couldn't find the iexplorer program. SO I ran spy sweeper..and was instantly able to load the desktop again and gain access to computer and internet. I updated and ran Hijack This, and this is the log...what do I do next? THANKS again,
-Guppy

OK...two things I forgot to add :tazz: FIRST< I am a little concerned now cause under DISPLAY from the Control Panel it only shows me Screen Saver and Settings Tabs and not the normal Themes, Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance and Settings. Should i be concerned about this and how do I fix it? Second thing is, I took off System Works 2003 AND Norton Anti-Virus 2005 so that may be why the log is smaller :) Thanks again for any and all help!!!

Let's run a full smitfraud advise.

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

***

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

***

Please download the trial version of ewido security suite.Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button

The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

***

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, please download and install AdAware SE 1.06.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

***

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

***

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

***

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.

That's looking good. Let's clean up the leftovers.

Download CleanUp!.
If that doesn’t work, use this link.
Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options"
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Once it's done, press Close. Reboot the system. This will remove files that were in use during the scan.

***

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\system32\O.BAT
C:\WINDOWS\system32\O

For these file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

Reboot to safe mode.

***

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
***

Use Windows Explorer to remove these folders:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\FunWebProducts
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MyWebSearch
C:\WINDOWS\system32\O

Close Windows Explorer when you are done.

***

Let hide the hidden files and folders again:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {9D1DE19F-9C84-4D7A-9931-E243D6FC857B} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {9D1DE19F-9C84-4D7A-9931-E243D6FC857B} - (no file) (HKCU)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

**

Reboot back to normal mode.

Is the computer running ok?

AGAIN, sorry for my delay I ran into two problems with the last couple instructions:***

***

I did this and when I went to hit the red button with the red X it said ALL LISTED FUKES WWILL BE DELETED ON NEXT REBOOT yes no -_ I clicked on YES on the next screen was the question about rebooting. I clicked no the first time and YES on the second time ( the last file I entered ) and when I hit YES it says VERIFYING REGISTRY FILES PLZ WAIT THEN SAYS PendingFileNameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process! The only option it gave me was OK nothing else. -_ I clicked ok then manually rebooted.

my second problem I ran into was in regards to this instruction:

I am assuming the line I was looking for would be word for word..the two i have when i run HiJack This are...

09- Extra 'tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmgs.exe

09- Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmgs.exe

I have done all other instructions with no problems. For your convenience, I have included a new Hijack This Log...what's next?

During the advise the situation on your computer changes. I should have mentioned that. You did great :tazz:

You can set the startpage:
Open Internet Explorer.
Under Tools > Internet Options > on the General tab change your startpage to the one you want.

Is the computer running ok now?
