I seem to have somehow gotten the PS Guard Virus as well (which is suprising to me). After many scans on every program suggested to me by the awsome "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Required steps before posting your log." post, it seems to have gotten better. The homepage problem is gone, and the trey icons are gone, but the background is still that ugly black screen telling me my computer is infected and that I need PS Guard. Here's two logs:

One thing though. With the Hijack This log, the topic said: "If you have anything disabled by MSConfig or any other startup manager, please re-enable it before scanning to post. "

I have always set my msconfig to start with only the programs I use, because there's about 6x the amount of programs in the list (including what I believe is the PS Guard program virus).

Hello And1Viper and welcome to Geeks To Go :tazz:

Please enable all the services, we need to see them all to be able to apply a fix for this.

After that's done reboot and show me a new log please. ;)

Please go through these steps again.

http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html

Now that everything has been renabled, we have a much better chance of getting rid of 80-85% of your problems.

See you when you get back :tazz:

Won't actually running PS Guard activate the virus... and I hope this will work, because I don't see how actually RUNNING all the programs will affect what we detect and are able to delete. Also, running all these programs (around 15) makes it even slower :tazz:

Ok good question, i need to see everything in action when i go after it. If anything is hidden and i give it a clean bill of health, as soon as you reactivate them services we will be right back at square one, with a infected machine.

You have to decide how you want this to proceed either completely fixed or just half way there.

If you want to go half way there then this is just waisting our time.

Oh I'm not reactivating any services. I always have them disabled this way.

My current situation is all perfect EXCEPT my desktop background (which still gives me that very annoying message), and the fact that my display properties only gives me access to my screensaver tab and the settings tab.

Ok this is what i have to say on this matter.

Since i will not start a cleaning process, that i have to battle with the entire way through, just to make some headway. Only to get you somewhat clean, to have you only return a few days later and have you say my machine still is not working properly. Unless you are prepared to follow my directions with this matter i will cease to try and help you.

You have to make a choice do we want to get this clean? Or sit here and fart around, by me trying to get you to do a few simple things for me?

I have others that i can and will help and i shall waste no more time on this unless, you wish to accomodate my requests.

Please decide, which way we should go with this.

I don't see where I haven't done what you said. I am just trying to make sure you understand my situation, and only asked why I should actually RUN the virus by starting under normal mode. I AM willing to do whatever you say, just trying to help you along the way :tazz:

EDIT: I just reread the whole topic, and you may have misunderstood me. When I said I'm not reactivating all services, I meant that I don't normally reactivate them, that I normally run with select services. I was not implying that I will not follow your orders.

Ok here is what we have to do.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Close all browsers and click fix on hijack this.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

And thanks to noadfear for this great fix. :tazz:

John, you are an absolute god. I cannot thank you enough for all that you've done, and all of it with no advantage to you, but know that you've practically saved my life :tazz:

My computer is better than it was before I got the virus, and almost as good as new. I appreciate the time and effort you put into everything you did.

Here's all that you've asked for:

Well my man you are clean congrats :tazz:

Your machine is looking good in both modes ;)

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free :)

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:

Spyware Blaster Spyware Guard

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE--Adaware Tutorial

Spybot S&D--Spybot Tutorial

Antiviruses play an important role in keeping your computer safe and worry free while using the net. *NOTE* Only one antivirus must be allowed to run on your computer, as having two or more running can and will cause conflicts.

AVG Avast

Firewalls are also a must in any good prevention :

Zone Alarm Sygate Kerio

There are different browsers available on the net, other than Internet Explorer, we believe!! these are better for security purposes :

Firefox Opera

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

This can be accessed by going to Windows Updates and following the prompts.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :

Rav Online Scan Housecall Online Scan Panda Activescan

Housecall Java Online Scan<---For those who use Firefox

And finally a little Posted Image How did I get infected in the first place ? (by Mr. Tony Klein and dvk01)

Good luck and safe surfing :(

I'm stunned that I got hit by a virus. I got hit the day I returned from a month protection, but my dad says it was fine during that time.

Can I ask you about Norton Internet Security and Anti-Virus? Are these two optimal protection?
