I have a pop-up window advising me of this virus and it says that it can not repair it nor delete it. I know my internet seems to get bogged down and not work properly. I have used Ad-Aware, Spybot s & D, Webroot Spy Sweeper, Ewido security suite and followed your instructions. Here is my Hijack This log. I have also included my scan log from Ewido Security Suite. :tazz: :) ;)

I can't get HiJack This to run. I have even downloaded it again to a CD but it still won't run. What now?

Step 1

Rename HijackThis.exe to H.exe. Try a scan. If it works, post the log back here. If not, proceed to the next step.

Step 2

Go to this link and download the 1.98 version of HijackThis.exe:

http://tomcoyote.org.../hijackthis.zip

Try a scan. If it works, post the log back here. If not, proceed to the next step.

Step 3

Click on the link below and download Itty Bitty Process Manager (IBProcMan.zip):

http://www.merijn.or...s/ibprocman.zip

Unzip it to it's own directory and try running it - it will provide a 'taskmanager' like process viewer in which you can stop running processes. Don't stop any yet, just list all that it has so I can check them and give advice. Post the list back here.

OK. Did that and now I have AVG Free telling me that I have an infected file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys with Trojan horse Generic.GM. I tell it to heal the file and it says ok and then within seconds it pops back up again with the same warning and then when I tell it to heal it tells me it can't do that. What do I do with this? Also, my free trial on Spy Sweeper expired so it has been deleted from my system as has the Norton Anti-virus.

Here is the new HiJackThis log after doing the fix you said to do.

Please follow all instructions as specified. Print these instructions to ensure all are followed.

Please download the following programs, but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
* Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
  • After the updates are installed exit Ewido.
* CleanUp!
  • Install it.
* Killbox by Option^Explicit
  • Save it to your desktop.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

4.) After Cleanup! is finished, run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot

Close HiJackThis.

5.) Double-click killbox.exe on your desktop.
*Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now highlight and 'copy' the entire list of filepaths below:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Open 'file' in the killbox menu at the top and choose 'Paste from clipboard'

Now you will see, this is pasted in the "Full Path of File to Delete"-field.
There's a little arrow (dropdown-arrow) next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines should be there together!

Then press the red button with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot.
Click YES

When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

After computer has restarted continue with the rest of the instructions:

6.) Make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

7.) Run BOTH of these online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan
TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the contents of rdriv.txt, the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Now we'll sort the smitrem trojan out.

Step 1

Configure Windows to Show all hidden files & folders and ensure you're familiar with rebooting into Safe Mode.

Download SmitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Download and install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite from here.
Configure the program correctly by following the instructions here and then close the program after updating the reference files.
Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions here.
Otherwise, check for updates and download any new reference files before closing the program. We'll use it in Safe Mode later.

Step 2

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode - Very Important !!

Run HJT again and checkmark the boxes next to the following:-

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intel32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intel32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O23 - Service: Windows Configuration Loader - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

Close ALL OPEN WINDOWS/BROWSERS and click Fix Checked

Step 3

Open the SmitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Step 4

Open Ad-aware and do a full system scan. Remove all it finds.

Step 5

Now open Ewido Security Suite:

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, do NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

Step 6

Next go to your Control Panel and click Display | Desktop | Customise Desktop | Website | Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, and do a full system scan.
Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and Ewido Log in your next reply to THIS thread. Let me know if any problems persist.

I'll try but since that last step my computer runs so slow and keeps giving me a message that I don't understand. I am not on my computer at this time so I can not tell you exactly what it says but everything takes forever to load. I have been trying to do anything on my computer and it takes so long, I just give up and shut down my computer. I'll let you know later what that message is. I'm at work right now and not at my computer. :tazz:

OK, I had to restore my computer back to factory default. I have installed and ran McAvee Internet Security. I think I have all the problems fixed. What do I need to send you to verify if everything is okay now?

OK let's try this. McAvee had to be completely shut down in order to download and run HJT. Here is the log. Let me know if there is anything else I need to do and if it is now OK to download Windows SP2.

If this has just been reformatted, you really got to have a good look at what sites you are visiting

Rerun HJT,and put a checkmark beside these :-

now close all windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

then reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

P.S do yourself a favour and uninstall macafee.

please download and install AVG anti-virus, check for updates and run a full scan. and
SYGATE FIREWALL. both of these are free and both are easy to set up.
