Thanks tremendously with the info on removing malware. I followed the steps, cleaned my computer and used the ad-aware with great success. When I restarted my computer I was very pleased to see the "Warning Your Computer Is Infected" off of my desktop, the psguard icon was gone off of my toolbar at the bottom and I was able to change the desktop. Your directions were very clear and it didn't take as long as I thought it would. KOODOS to you and everyone on this site.

Thanks Tremendously,
Denise

Hi Denise and welcome to GTG.

Which steps did you follow? It wasn't from another user's fix was it?

My suggestion is to give us your HijackThis log. PS Guard is one of the more stubborn infections. It has a very persistent registry entry that can't be removed easily. Ad-aware and others can't remove this (at least not that we know of yet).

This really shouldn't be posted here (should be in Malware Forums), so I will ask a Moderator to move this over for us.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

QuickSearch

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\QuickSearch\

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi Denise,

What happens if you double click on that WildTangent entry again? Will it go away (just say yes if it asks you anything)? If not, go back into HijackThis and click on Config->Misc Tools->Open Uninstall Manager. Look for WildTangent and click on it. Then click on the Delete button in the HijackThis program.

Now go to C:\Program Files\ and see if you can find and delete WildTangent. Yes, you may search to see if there are any more leftovers for WildTangent.

Did you install WeatherBug? If so, you may keep that one. It's just adware :tazz: But if not, uninstall it.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Thank you so much. I believe that I have removed wild tangent, at least I couldn't find it. Hopefully you won't be hearing from me in the near future, I'm crossing fingers at least.
Thanks again for all your help,
Denise
