wininet.dll infected with W32.Desktophijack [CLOSED]

The other day, some shortcuts appeared on my desktop after I had disconnected from the Internet. I deleted them, and everything seemed fine. Today I booted up my computer and logged on to the Internet and my desktop background changed to something that said my computer was vulnerable to spyware and that i should click on a link to fix it. My homepage was also changed to about:blank, and will not change back if I try to adjust it with the Internet Options. Also, a small, red icon with a white exclamation mark has appeared on my system tray, constantly flashing "Your computer is infected! Click here to to protect your computer from spyware/virus threats." I ran Ad-Aware SE twice, each time finding more infected files that I quarantined and removed. After scanning and removing, I was able to recover my desktop, but the system tray icon was still there, and my homepage was still set to about:blank. Norton AntiVirus found that wininet.dll was infected with a virus called W32.Desktophijack, but was unable to quarantine or delete it.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\WINNT\System32\msmsgs.exe <= this file
C:\Program Files\PSGuard <= this folder

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt (C:\smitfiles.txt) log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

I got as far as rebooting in safe mode. For some reason, when I press F8 during the boot up process, nothing happens. I did it before the windows icon appeared and after the computer beeped and still nothing. There is even a loading screen that says press F8 for troubleshooting options, and when I press it during that screen, still nothing happens.

Please try it again:

1. Restart your computer.
2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. When that is completed it will start loading Windows.
3. When you see the screen that has a black and white bar at the bottom stating "Starting Windows", tap the F8 key repeatedly until you get to the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu
4. At this menu use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode option, which is usually the first in the list.
5. Press the enter key.
6. Your computer will continue booting, but now will boot into Safe Mode.
7. Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.
