A week ago Thursday, my monitor went crazy and it's all distorted like an old tv with bad reception. I've concluded from the monitor's self-test that it isn't the monitor. It's a Dell 17" LCD and it's worked fine since Christmas. The next day, the mouse and keyboard started freezing. I actually thought it was the computer freezing up at first, until I saw a program continue to run, but had lost all function with the mouse and keyboard. I downloaded new mouse and keyboard drivers, uninstalled previous drivers and reinstalled the new drivers, which seemed to help for a little while, on and off. Although I had to reinstall several times. I thought I had finally got it almost there, when my mouse worked nearly all day yesterday, but it stopped again. I've tried to reinstall with newly downloaded drivers to no avail. I'm losing my mind. Working on this all day, nearly every day for the past 10 days, to the point I'm cracking up now. This is the third time I've attempted to post this message. I lost the last two attempts. I will copy it before hitting submit this time, though. Don't want to try again. Just want to mention that my system restore doesn't work. I never could get it to save a point, although I wouldn't know where to begin now. It was also suggested that I reinstall the OS, but I've moved twice since I got Windows ME and I haven't been able to find the original disks (plus alot of other things), but I really don't think that would solve the problem anyway.

I have run the following scans:

Housecall, Trend Micro -- NONE
McAfee -- NONE (current, took several days to complete an update)
TrojanHunter -- I think it said it fixed 2 files
Panda Active Scan -- found 3 files
C:\windows\DownloadedProgramFiles\turbo.inf
C:\ProgramFiles\PestPatrol\help.chm[HowCanITestDetection.html]
C:\null
Spybot -- NONE
AdAware -- found cookies
MWAV Antivirus -- Have log file

and I kept getting a low disk space message while running the scans even though I had removed quite a few old programs and deleted cookies and files, and emptied recycle bin. I ran CleanUp and it generated nearly an extra gig of drive space. The only thing that seems a bit odd is a McAfee temp folder. I just don't recall ever noticing one before. Could just be my imagination. Just thought I'd mention it.

I can't run the scans again until I can get the mouse working. Most of them require you to "click," which you can't do without a mouse. Talk about frustrating.

I really don't know where else to turn. I would so very, very, very much appreciate any assistance. Thank you so very, very, very much in advance.

Here's my HJT log:

My system has been down for about 2 1/2 weeks now . . . I've run everything I can find to run on it. My mouse continues to lock up, as well as the keyboard and/or the entire system. I've been trying to run TrendMicro Housecall on-line, but it continually locks up around 8660 files. I've just now downloaded the 30-day free trial, but can't seem to get it to install because it continues to find an uninstalled listing for McAfee. I couldn't get it to remove the listing in Add/Remove Programs. It seems like my DSL connection is also getting slower. I just can't seem to locate the culprit. I don't know what else to try. I've run everything in your "start here" file and then some. I've been searching through your site for the past two plus weeks on my son's computer. It's been almost my only link to your site with my system constantly locking up.

I posted almost a week ago now on 7/31. I thought I had replied here, as well, but with my system locking up every other keystroke, I never seem to know what goes through and what I have to retry. I apologize for the original double post. I hope this is the first reply here. I couldn't find any other replies in my account. Here is my link from last week:

July 31st - http://www.geekstogo...topic=49694&hl=

I thought maybe I should post a new HJT log (maybe it would help), but didn't know if it would change my previous post or not, so I'm trying to post it here. Hope it doesn't complicate anything.

Hi totianni,

I moved your recent log here, so we have it all in one place.

There are two other logs I'd like to see for that computer.

One from rootkitrevealer:
http://www.sysintern...itrevealer.html

And a Startuplist
Please proceed exactly as shown here: http://home.planet.n...tml#Startuplist

Regards,

Metallica, thank you so much for replying. I'm going a little crazy here. I should also warn you that usually by the time I need help, it can be quite a challenge.

I downloaded "RootKitRevealer." I tried to run it, but got 2 error windows: "The PSAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:wcslen" which overlays another error message that I cannot read because I cannot move the first window with my mouse because it only works for a few seconds now, at best.

Here is the StartUp List from HJT:

StartupList report, 8/7/2005, 1:08:55 PM

The mouse, when working, moves jerky. I don't know how else to describe it. I've deleted the hardware, uninstalled drivers, downloaded new drivers and reinstalled the new drivers. I can only get it to work for a limited time and there is no rhyme or reason to it. I have to hard reboot quite often, as well.

Thanks, again, for trying to help me.

OK. I want to rule out L2M first.

Please download L2m9xfix here:
http://www.geekstogo...ds/l2m9xfix.exe

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat

Do you have a HP scanner?

Even though you can't find the Windows CD I'd like you to try this anyway.

Click Start > Run and enter sfc /scannow Note the space behind sfc
Let me know if you are prompted for the CD and let me know which file it wanted to fetch.

No, I do not have an HP scanner. I have a Canon Multipass MP390. It's a combination scanner, fax, printer, copier.

I tried to run the sfc, but it said windows cannot find sfc, may have typed it wrong, but didn't. I included the space before /scannow.

I found the following files: c:\windows\system\sfc.dll and c:\windows\system\sfcvrt32.dll and c:\windows\help\sfc

Any other ideas?

The one you need is sfc.exe

PM me your email address if it is actually gone.

But send out a search party for the CD, because I fear the worst if essential files like that are gone.

I sent you a PM with email address.

The sfc file is missing. I could only locate the files I posted previously. I am looking for the disk, but don't have much hope. The basement is a disaster and it's down there somewhere.

Is there anything else I can do? Did I mention the trojans found: backdoor retro64, 2nd-thought and backdoor.omerta? Could they be the cause? Should I be preparing myself to upgrade to XP or would it even help?

I knew that if I couldn't fix it within the week, it was really gonna be a problem. I'm sorry you got this mess. Thanks again for all your help.

This is the second time I tried to reply. It seems like it takes an awfully long time for it to submit the reply.

I sent you a copy of sfc.exe with an explanation how to use it.

Let me know if it helps or if there are more files it asks for.

None of the malwares you mentioned should be responsible for missing files, but the backdoors do open up your computers for abuse when given the chance.

And some of these pesterkiddies will enjoy anything they can destroy. :tazz:

I ran sfc /scannow and it said "A required .DLL file, SFC_OS.DLL was not found."

I have to get ready for work (it's about 4:21), but should be home about 9pm here. I'm not sure where you are and what the time is, but I would really like to get something working here. I haven't been able to get anything done for so long and I really have to get some bills out and I'm afraid to access anything personal on my computer.

I'll check back as soon as I get home. Thanks for the help.

We haven't found the disk yet, but we're still looking. Doesn't look good. I found some cab files on my computer which included dll and exe files, but I still didn't find the sfc.exe file. I did find a sfc.dll file, but that one wasn't missing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I sent the missing sfc_os.dll file to my email from my son's computer, but got another error message that the sfc_os.dll file was missing an export file??? ntdll.dll, but I have that file. I'll try again in the morning and get the error message if you still need it. Thanks.l

OK. Let me know.

You mentioned you had some plans to upgrade to XP otherwise.

Just giving you some advance reading material:

Here are the errors:

The SFC_OS.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:RtlDeleteCriticalSection.

sfc
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

I'm really not in a hurry to upgrade (especially after reading your links). I use some older programs that would concern me to upgrade and would really cost me to upgrade all of them.

Is there anything else I can try now?

What does sfc do?

I couldn't run RootReveal, but I read that there are at least 2 other programs that do the same thing--Blacklight? and Ghostbuster?? Would they work with ME?
