need ethernet help

hey i need help on hooking up the ethernet to my computer. i have the ethernet cord in my computer and i put the install wizard disk into my computer and and whenever the disk does a connectivity check it says that it was unable to establish a network connection.
help me please

Howdy and welcome to G2G:

So are you signed up to a broadband ISP??

Do you have a cable or DSL modem for broadband??

Or, are you just trying to setup a simple LAN between two computers??

im signed up for comcast. and it is a cable modem and i am trying to set up the internet for my computer.

Have you setup your broandband connection as per Comcasts instructions.. IP address, DNS server address, username and password, etc.. ??

Are you using a normal coax cable from your cable jack to your cable modem and then a cat5 cable from the modem to your NIC??
