Right-click the Start button and go to "explore" to get into Windows Explorer.

Set your system to SHOW HIDDEN FILES

Go into the following folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

There will be 2 similar looking files (they may have the same name...)

Look for these:

logonui.exe <-this is the legitimate one, if you right-click and go to properties it will have a Microsoft signature and created 08/04/2004 with a size of 514,560

l?gonui.exe <-may be the same name as the legitimate one or it may actually have a questionmark (or other weird character) in the name. If you right-click and go to properties there will be no microsoft signature and created 10/05/2004 and 380,928 in size. This is the one you need to delete!

Make absolutely sure you do not delete the legitimate Microsoft file.

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:

Thanks alot Banana... you helped alot. Funny thing is.. I have and run regularly.. AdAware, Spybot AND Spywareblaster... Don't know how all that slipped by those 3 unless those were there before I got them the last time I was here. I never did any of the things you had me do before. :tazz: See you soon!

You're welcome! ;)

The main one slipped by because Messenger Plus 3 was installed. :)

I recommend staying far away from the program, but it's just my personal opinion to stay away from applications that infect me with spyware :(

If you must re-install Messenger Plus 3, remember to install it WITHOUT the sponsor program!

Please follow the other recommendations on the list to help prevent this from happening again :tazz:
