A problem is occurring every time i try to start up the computer. I'm getting the message:

For Realtek RTL8110S/8169S Gigabit Ethernet Controller v1.01 (030820)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.

I've looked in the boot priorities list in BIOS but the realtek option was already disabled, and there was no USB boot option. Also, there isn't an HDD boot option.
My priorities list looks like this:

1st- Floppy:1.44 MB 3 1/2
2nd- Disabled
3rd- CD/DVD-0:SONY DVD RW DW-U18A

Try Other Boot Devices- Yes

I've tried disabling the floppy, disabling everything, setting 'try other boot devices' to no, and even enabling the Realtek option, which is called
BBS-0(Network):Realtek Boot Agent.

Do you have any idea what I should do? I'm getting really worried that my hard disk's contents have been randomly obliterated. Everything was fine last night :tazz:

Okay, I've made a development... kinda. I put the windows boot disk in, and when it loaded up and got to the "Windows XP Home Edition Setup" screen I got the following error:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

What should I do? I'm guessing this is why it isn't booting up right - it thinks there's no hard disk to boot from. Like the error message suggested I'm going to check it's connected right but I'm not sure if there's anything else I should be doing.

Thanks, corpus

Is your HDD detected by the BIOS ? If not and you've checked the connections to the HDD then it's probably faulty.
Try replacing the ribbon cable with a new one, check the jumper settings on the HDD, try using a different power lead (ie the one from your CD drive). If still no joy then you need a new hard drive.

Erm..okay. This is wierd. The HDD isn't actually connected to the ribbon cable. There are two plugs going into it: a smallish black one, a little smaller than a USB, which links directly to the motherboard and is apparently an ATA Serial cable, and a larger white one which I'm assuming is the power cable. However, I'm not sure I can swap this round because some of the wires branch off it into a smaller white plug on the underside of my graphics card. Would it be safe to leave the graphics card's end of the cable plugged in, but take the motherboard's cable out? I can't see why it wouldn't be, but I don't really want to inadvertently break my sexy (well, it was sexy, once) Radeon 9800 Pro.

EDIT: After rearranging all the CD drives and so on, I managed to get the power cable thang done, but still the computer isn't detecting the HDD. I can't try to replace the ATA cable, because Evesham, the manufacturers of my computer, have ever-so-helpfully glued it on.

How would I "check the jumper settings"? Sorry, I'm not exactly a whizz when it comes to computers' insides.

Is it possible for an HDD to become faulty overnight, though? My PC was working great the other night, and then yesterday morning it just suddenly didn't work at all, and it had been shut down properly and there had been no signs of any problems or of anything at all out of the ordinary. Besides having to totally wipe and reboot the machine just before Christmas, it's been running perfectly fine for over a year now.
