Hello,

My home computer was infected with some 56 threats according to Norton. I have been able to get rid of all of them except:

1) Elitebar won't go away -- I tried following Norton's removal instructions but it doesn't help.
2) 180Search shows up as having 2 files in "C:\Recycler"

Questions:
1) How do I get rid of Elitebar?
2) Does it matter if 180 Search shows up only in C:\Recycler?
3) Can I still use my home computer to go online? I haven't gone online with it in a month or so because I can't get rid of Elitebar -- will this either download anything else to my computer or else send any of my personal information from my computer?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Please Click here!, and follow the recommendations in the guide.

If you're still having trouble, We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide, and reply here with your log.

Most of what Hijack This lists lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Thank you for your quick reply. I finally have downloaded and run all those programs (I'm on dialup with extra pop up ads...). There is still an elitebar problem (I think the trend micro scan got rid of the c:/recycler issues, though). Also, everytime I start the computer I get a popup saying that c:\windows\cfgmgr52.dll is missing - any ideas re that?

Per norton - the elitebar items I can't shake are:
C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka62.exe
C:\WINDOWS\etb\nt_hide62.dll
and this is a "suspicious script": C:\WINDOWS\system32\shao.vbs

Here is my hijack this log -- thanks for any guidance you can give me:

OK, I ran Panda (at least once -- my computer freaked out on me the first time through). Here is my report. I'll also rerun hijack this and give you an up to date log of that, too.

Hi again,

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix. Be sure to ask any questions before proceeding the fix.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp!

Run the CleanUp! installer and get the program ready to be used but don't run it yet.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Run a scan with HiJackThis and check the following objects for removal;

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSof1] C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitehum32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System service62] C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka63.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [x3nX37O] icgevnt1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cfgmgr52] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll,DllRun
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System service63] C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka63.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai....23/cpbrkpie.cab
O16 - DPF: {972BB342-14A7-4660-83C1-51DDBEE171DB} - http://www.pacimedia...ll/pcs_0006.exe

Close any other open windows and/or open browsers, making sure that only HiJackThis is running. Make sure that the above mentioned objects are all checked, then hit "Fix Checked".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following;

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files - option.

Now, using Windows Explorer, locate the following folders and delete if present;

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Aprps
C:\PROGRAM FILES\CasStub
C:\Program Files\Aprps\
C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\
C:\WINDOWS\etb\

Then locate these files and delete if present;

C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\AOL Spyware Protection\Backup\QFle0709200523086247944.asw
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QBUninstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.ini
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\TSF\FAVORITES\Casino & Carrers
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe

Locate these two folders.. Delete their content ONLY. Not the folder themselves;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\
C:\RECYCLER\

When finished, launch Ad-Aware SE and click on the gear to access the Configuration menu. Please make sure that this setting is applied;

Click on Tweak => Cleaning engine => UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion". Click on "Finish". Run a Full System Scan and remove ALL it finds.
(Delete everything from the quarantine as well.)

Exit Ad-aware.

Now open Ewido and do a scan of your system.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • Clean anything it finds.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close Ewido.

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Delete Cookies
      This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp
Finally, reboot back into normal mode. Post a fresh HiJackThis log here along with the Ewido log.

Hello!

Please download miekiemoes' LQfix batch here:
LQfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site;
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run LQfix.bat.

When finished, reboot into normal mode.

Post a fresh HiJackThis log.

Great job it appears your log is clean. :tazz:

**Re-hide hidden files option you modified earlier**

Let's clear out your restore points now.

Disable System Restore;

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check the "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply. An message shows up.
6. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Confirm with "Ok".

Reboot.

Enable System Restore;

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click "OK".

System Restore will now be active again. :) Be sure to set a new restore point, and if you need additional help with that, here's a link; http://filext.com/in...thread.php?t=27

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice;
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My favourite)

Remember only to use 1 anti-virus & firewall at the time. No more than 1. Then again, 2-3 anti-spyware programs is good, just depends on the products though.

Visit;
http://www.windowsupdate.com to get all critical updates. Install them and reboot.
