Hello again!

Since working on my sister's computer, I've noticed my own computer is acting a bit sluggish. I was wondering if I might also have some sort of infection. I've done a full scan with all the recommended programs, but I'm still not sure. Could someone please look over my log?

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Please disable Spybot TEATIMER and Spyware Doctor as they may interfere with what we need to do.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies

  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

After Cleanup! is finished:

    Click on full system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report[list]
[*]Click Save report
[*]Save the report to your desktop
[*]Exit Ewido

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they still exist:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2} - (no file)

Unless you or system administrator set the following policies or they were set with Spybot S & D then also check the following entries

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
U(N) O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked

Now reboot pc normally.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Rescan with HJT and post the log back, with the ewido and panda logs.

Thanks!

Okay, here's the new HJT log, and the Panda log. When ewido finished scanning, the program closed and gave me no option to save a log. I was away from the computer, so I'm not sure if there was an error or if actually is supposed to do that. I went back into safe mode a second time to try scanning after the other scans were finished, but the program wouldn't open. I can try again if I need to, but here's what I have so far.

Also, I notice I still have things from Symantec in here. When I upgraded to XP, I was having problems using and re-downloading Norton Utilities, which is why I switched to AVG and supposedly uninstalled Norton. Is there a way to be rid of those things if I don't need them?

Removing Norton completely is a pain.

Follow these instructions.

Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this the
SYMANTEC website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
