Am newbie desperate for help. Am in small office & I'm tech support-the learn as you go method. I do try to keep up w/MS critical updates but am about a month behind.
Have 3 desktops-all are Win XP Pro. Newest one has factory install xp sp2 w/Norton 2004 internet security and is also used as file server. No problems w/it (so far). Each computer is independent on DSL router. The other two are both sp1. I'll call them computer "A" and "B". Each of them are locking up at shutdown - lockup occurs at the "saving your settings" stage. They both have Norton disabled and unable to open; IE won't open on either one. If they are booted in safe mode w/networking, IE works. Have tried winsockfix; clean up; adaware; cwshredder; spybot; ewido; trend; trojanhunter and each removed one or two things, such as adware.myway.100; adware.qdb.100; trojandownloader.agent jb & bq; backdoor.small.dc but am still having the same problems. Have posted this at swi forums in case it all sounds familiar, but have not seen a replying post.
I'm including the hjt log I saved today, hope that is ok. I'm sorry it's two computers but one is the boss' & I'm sure there's more gremlins on his than the other one. Thank you very much for your help & patience.

I'd like to handle computer A first. I think it will get too confusing if we try to cure two in one thread.

First off, you said they are on SP1. If they are, they have a funny way of showing it. :tazz:

Computer A

Download: DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Thanks for the reply, but I need to pass on some info to see if you still want me to try the steps you suggested.
First, on computer A, the boss got impatient and kept trying different things & posted to the forum on majorgeeks and has been working w/someone there (w/no success as of yet). So, should I post a new hjt log from computer A for you to look at and we can go from there? That way I can tell him to leave it alone because you are working on it! :tazz:
Also, someone from the spybot forum replied to me this a.m. for a new hjt log and I sent one from computer B.
Sorry such a mess-just idiots desperate for help.

No problem.

Leave links to the topics where they are working on them and I'll take a peek.

No need to have several log-readers working on the same computers when there are so many people waiting.

okay, thanks. We are in desperate need of new ideas. We are about to the "screw it-let's just format" stage.

This is the page-hope I'm pasting link right.

http://forums.majorg...ead.php?t=69242

At this point, if he disables all Norton Internet Security processes, the computer will shutdown okay & he can get on the internet. But, if Norton is running, he gets the shutdown lockup & no internet access. So, he tried to uninstall Norton but it won't uninstall. He tried running system repair w/the orig. win xp config disc but that didn't help.

How about installing Norton "over the top"

That means without uninstalling it first. If you are at the "I'll format if you don't behave" stage anyway. :tazz:

Yes he tried that :tazz:
He emailed symantec & they've responded that the "validity of SymNRT tool has been expired" and to download it from their site, backdate the system clock & then run it.
Do you think we've just got OS problems & not malware?

Definitely some spyware and you're behind in updates. Solving those two might go a long way.

Could you please, please help me with computer B? It's not letting me install or uninstall anything, programs aren't responding and it's the pits!
I'm not getting anywhere w/the other forum. I know the computer needs updates but can't get on the internet w/it except in safe mode & it won't let me install anyway. :tazz:

Let's start with the basics. What happens if you try to install something?

Also post a link to where you were being helped, so I can see what has already been tried.

http://forums.spywar...c=53072&hl=jbet

I did follow those instructions and it did ask for the disc which I put in and I guess it corrected whatever it found. The command line came back up and I typed in exit and that was it.

IE won't open except in safe mode w/networking and Norton Antivirus won't open (2002) at all. When the computer starts the shutdown process, End Program pop-ups come up for Norton Antivirus; AXWIN Frame window; and iexplore.exe, in that order and you have to end task for them to quit & the shutdown process to continue, but then it hangs on the "saving your settings point". I tried to uninstall Norton thinking that there was a corrupted file that was causing some of the problems but couldn't get it to install so I ckd symantec website for instructions on manual removal.
http://service1.syma...src=bar_sch_nam
Following the instructions on that document, I tried to run the removal utility-the first popup opened that said only try this if uninstall from add/remove programs doesn't work.....& I hit okay and that was it. Nothing else happened. So I tried the next step to run the MS window clean-up utility per instructions and when I finished jumping through the ms hoops to actually download the *&$% thing & run it, the windows installer window opened and locked up. And now the installer locks up anytime it opens.
I think that's it-all that I'm aware of anyway, except that now, the computer is really slow and some of the other programs that we use are hanging & you have to end task to get out of them.
Would appreciate any productive ideas!!!! Thanks so much for the help :tazz:

Download and run EasyCleaner from: http://personal.inet...rts/ecleane.htm

Use it to clean your registry and check if it is set to make a backup.

I can't escape the feeling that some thing have been removed with an axe rather then as advised. :tazz:

Followed your link; downloaded; installed and ran and it cleaned some stuff up but still having the same problems.

Well, I'm not sure who wielded the axe me or the boss but, evidently it was a good job and frankly I give up.

Thanks anyway.

Sometimes it's better to cut the losses, learn from mistakes and make a better start. :tazz:

Please do have a look at my site about removing and preventing spyware.
