moving documents from Office Suite to windows 98

I haven't a clue as to even ask the question I want answered, but here's the deal. My computer says Windows 98. I bought an offbrand word processor program called Office Suites and I'm trying to get a document from a cd (written originally on windows me) to go on the Office Suites Text as a text document, but it just comes up garbled. Do I need to format it or convert it or any other of those words before I can read it? Do I do this shen it leaves the ME computer or after it gets to the 98 computer?
