I have found this site very useful so far and have follwed the procedures suggested in a number of threads in an attempt to rid my computer of w?crtupd, but without success. Adware SE, Kilbox, Ewido, CWShredder & Spybot all used so far. The thread I found most useful was by ASMCONSULT posted 26/Jun/05. All seemed OK but I didn't have a Prefetch folder with contents to delete and a Hijack this scan didn't show any of the lines listed for deletion. I guess everyones infection can differ.

Can you help please and do you see other problems that can be sorted at the same time? Many thanks.

Graham P

Are you running Norton and AVG? You only need one antiviral. Please get rid of one if both are anti-virals. If Norton is a firewall, please keep it and AVG anti-viral.

Please download CleanUp! - Download - HomePage

Don't run it yet.

There are quite a few programs available that offer protection features to help keep a computer from getting infected. While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep a victim from making the changes necessary to clean their comptuer. Please read the following and uninstall or disable those that apply to your machine.

These programs need to be uninstalled

AdWatch

These programs can just be disabled

Microsoft Antispyware
TeaTimer
SpySweeper
Win Patrol
Spyware Guard
PSGuard
Pestpatrol
Regrun
Diamonds Process controller

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xgmicf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?crtupd.exe
C:\Program Files\wpra\atri.exe

Click on the button labeled CleanUp!.

When it finishes it will prompt you to restart Windows - there will be one or two files it cannot delete when Windows is running - however, they will be deleted next time Windows starts up.

Many thanks for the help so far.

Uninstalled Norton Antivirus (which was part of System Works) leaving Password Manager and Clean Sweep installed.

Couldn't find any trace of ADWATCH

Only found Microsoft Antispyware from the list to be disabled so I disabled it.

Ran HijackThis and found and deleted all the keys your mentioned.

On reboot system stalled on the Win2k splash screen before login. Switched off and back on again and although it took a long time to start, all appears OK.

Havn't had any popups occur whilst being online completing this post - looks very promising.

Do you see any other garbage in the log?

Again - thanks ever so much for your help.

I still see signs of Norton and AVG. Not good to run two anti-virals, or did you say Norton is just used as desired?

The log looks good, just always worried that something may be buried. Let's try two more things before I cut you loose.

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Please run a free online virus scan here:

Hello again

IE has crashed twice since undertaking the changes made in your last post and the PC is taking about 15mins to reboot, with the progress bar sticking at about 70% for ages. Apart from this all seems OK.

Re Norton Antivirus - I used to use NAV2001 a few years ago but uninstalled it when I bought AVG. Since buying the AVG I have also installed Norton Systems Works 2004, mainly for the utilitys it has. I reinstalled the other day, leaving out the antirus module, so whatever traces there may be, they should be inactive. Also, I Symantec Winfax installed. I can uninstall all of the above and then just reinstall Winfax if you think it would help. What do you think?

Silent Runners and Panda Soft reports below.

Again, many thanks for your advice and help

Graham

Go to add/remove programs and remove Gator.

Please download CleanUp! - Download - HomePage
Don't run it yet.

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
