Please someone help me. I've looked all over the internet for a solution but can't find one. I have a

Sony Vaio Pentium 4, 2.4GHz 480 MB Ram running Windows XP home.

The problem is that none of my USB ports are working properly. The front two USB ports don't recognize anything plugged into them.( all USB cords being plugged into have been used on the computer before) Also the 4 ports in the back bring up an error when I connect the USB into them. It says "USB Device Not Recognized" I looked at the Device Manager, and it says:

SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller (there's a yellow ! next to this. I assumed the driver was insalled wrong but when i try to reinstall it, it says "A error occurred during the installation of the device: The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor.)
Unknown Device
Unknown Device
Unknown Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

That's all if gives me. Nothing is connected to any of the USB ports. Also I uninstalled all of my USB drivers and rebooted. It properly installed those top three but when it came to the forth it gave me that error. Can someone please walk me through the solution?

The USB devices are the last on the list to be assigned IRQs so often when you add a couple of PCI cards your USB ports stop working.

i had a usb problem. seems to me u have a driver problem. this little test always works. get a usb keyboard. and try to get into bios with it. if it works, its a driver problem. if not, its a usb port problem. i think it is a driver problem.

i am thinking a reinstallment of ur OS would do it...

Real quick I updated to SP2 thought it might help....it didn't. Same problem. The only thing it helped with was fixed my yellow ! driver. But still no ports working.

OK You probably have updated USB 2.0 Drivers in SP2 . So now you have all USB Controllers recognized by Device Manager.

I would use the rear USB Ports for now – Front Ports may only be USB [1.1] – The front ports are generally wired via cable and are often wrong or easily knocked off. The 2 rear USB ports near the PS2 Ports are hardwired right-angled connectors wired right to the motherboard – Eliminates several problems & this equates to be more reliable.

However there are a [Jumper Set] that needs to be put on. It is + 5 VDC power for USB. This jumper configures whether you want the USB Port to [WAKE-UP] System from [SLEEP MODE] – but still is needed to supply power.

One more item: Do you have any USB HUBS installed? The - iPod Dock – may need an Externally Powered USB HUB – This would require a driver to be loaded also before connecting HUB.

Now you should add the USB drivers for each device:

1- Disconnect all USB devices
2- Do 1 USB device installation at a time
3- Do not Connect any device until the proper step
4- Pick a device & Install the USB Driver for that device
5- Restart PC to load driver
6- Connect USB device & turn [ON]
7- Plug & Play should: - “Found New Device”
8- Device Manager should recognize Device

Hopefully this worked – I am assuming that the Application Software is present for the USB Device.

The key is loading the Device Application & Device USB Driver – Restart PC to load Application & Driver – Connect Device to a USB Port -
Plug & Play needs the Driver 1st - the device 2nd - It is trying to match a driver to a device - not a device to a driver -[Impotant difference]
