Dear Messrs,

I got some bug in my system. Norton said it was Adware.Fastlook and Adware.Livechat and Panda said it was Adware.sbsoft and Spyware.wareout - and who am I to argue I don't know what it is except that something is wrong with this box.

The following are my HiJackThis and SilentRunners logs - if and of you can help me I would be most graciously and enternally grateful.

Can you please let the good folks at CastleCops know that you are getting help elsewhere so they can close that log and a helper won't get tied up doing a fix for you. Thanks.

Open Hijackthis and do a scan. Place a check next to the following entries:

Click FIX CHECKED Close HJT

If you use Windows XP, Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Go to Start>search and look for this file: cspoa.exe
Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

When you find it, please post the entire path for me.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmrxr.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hclean32.exe

Post a fresh HiJackThis log and a fresh Silent Runners log.

Dear Excal,

I've informed Happy Shiner at CastleCops that you are helping me and that they can close my case with them. The Computer Security community must be close knit. ;)

I've done as you suggested. I've had HiJackThis fix the items you mentioned. When I did a search for cspoa.exe it couldn't fid it even though I had checked the advanced options you mentioned. Also, a search in HiJackThis did not locate dmrxr.exe nor hclean.exe, so I did not do those portions of the instructions.

Here are the fresh logs:

Please download the Killbox.

Please run Killbox.
  • Select "Delete on Reboot".
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmrxr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hclean32.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..
  • Let the system reboot.

Excal,

I ran killbox. I selected Delete on Reboot and pasted from clipboard the two files. I clicked on yes when asked Delete on Reboot? I didn't get a Pending Operations promt and killbox just went ahead and checked the registry and then claimed to have removed some pending operation registers. I then rebooted and ran this log:

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision 39, http://www.silentrunners.org/

I got a blue screen saying it had to check the integrity of the disk but with subsequent reboots no blue screen. NAV seems to be taking more time than usual to get enabled, that's how it's been acting since I got this bug. ;)

Thanks Excal. :tazz:

Copy everything in the quote box below (starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into Notepad. Go up to "File > Save As", then click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixware.reg on your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\]
"hclean32.exe"=-
"dmjpc.exe"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\]
"System"=-
"System"=""

Double-click fixware.reg and when asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

After reboot, please download RKFiles from HERE
  • Unzip RKfiles.zip to the desktop
  • Double-click RKFiles.bat to run it.
    • It may take a while.
  • When it is finished a window should appear with a log.
  • Please copy the contents of the log and paste them here
    • Note: the log with be saved at c:\log.txt

Hi gabybaby,

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\]
text/xml\CLSID=-

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Reboot and post me a HiJackthis log and tell me how everything is working.

NAV still takes a minute or two to enable but otherwise system seems fine - no NAV alerts of impending doom like before. :tazz:

Everything points to your system being clean of malware. You might want to check with NAV help and see if they can maybe help you with that. At this time I don't believe it is Malware related.

If you need anything else, please ask ;)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

Dear Excal,

Thanks so much for your help. I will consider the suggestions you made in your last post re: applications. I'm so glad that another bug bit the dust. :tazz:

I don't know if you can tell me or not - but if you can what would be reasonable compensation for the services you provided? I am a firm believer that everyone should be paid for the work that they do.

I'll see to it that a donation is made tomorrow. For now it's past midnight and I think "I" have a few loose registry keys in my brain. I'll get to paypal in the morning when I "reboot". :)

Thanks again forever! ;)
