winfixer 2005 [RESOLVED]

I have the winfixer2005 and can't get rid of it. I have read some of the other posts but don't know what a "log file" is. I have run adaware, CWShreder, and McAfee virus scan, nothing about the winfixer showed up. There is an icon on the lower right tool bar that says it is downloading. I have searcher for "winfixer" and nothing came up there either. Can I get rid of it on my own?

Ok. I completed all of the steps (Cleanup, Ad-Awar SE, CW Shredder, Spybot). I ran my McAfee virus scan and completed the windows updates. The WinFixer2005 icon no longer appears in the bottom task bar but it does present itself when I restart the computer. Here is my Hijack This log. Thanks for your easy to follow help!!!

Hi Jennifer, you have multiple infections here. We'll try to take care of them one by one.

You have the Peper infection. Download PeperUninstall http://www.greyknigh...erUninstall.exe. Make sure you are connected online to run this program. Run it once and reboot. Then run it again for the second time. Download PeperFix http://www.greyknigh...py/PeperFix.exe and save it to your Desktop. Run it and click 'Find and Fix' (reboot if prompted).

Uninstall WinTools from your Add/Remove panel and delete this folder if still found:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I did the pepper stuff and when I ran the last check (pepperfix.exe) it reported that "no pepper files were detected". Here is the log from the L2MFix.

This program was not found in my add/remove panel and I could not locate the folder.

Uninstall WinTools from your Add/Remove panel and delete this folder if still found:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Something doesn't look right here. That should have removed it. Was it giving you any problems when you ran it? If so, please tell me so I know and will advise what else to do. Try running L2MFix again and choose option #2. Get that log posted here.

Then do this:

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful')
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Uninstall Viewpoint and MaxSpeed via your Add/Remove panel if they are listed.

Locate and delete the following:

Do a search for m?config.exe and right click on any of the files found. Go to Properties->Version tab and see if it's from Microsoft. Do this for each file found. If it's not from Microsoft (or doesn't even have a version tab) and it was created recently, then delete it.

Finally, restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the report log from the Ewido scan.

Whew! I think I did everything. There was no problem doing the L2MFix. The only thing I noticed was that it said, at the very top before I typed the #2, "A subdirectory of file backregs already exists". But there was no problem doing the scan or anything. It went like you said it would. Here is that log........

GOOD NEWS! I just rebooted and no sign of WinFixer2005!!! YEEEEOOOW! But you mentioned that I have "multiple infections". Is there still work that needs to be done?

For this file -> c:\windows\system32\WMIwvz.dll
Was it created recently? Delete it if it is.

You may do these in Normal Mode since Safe Mode is not showing some of those entries.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Do a search for m?config.exe and right click on any of the files found. Go to Properties->Version tab and see if it's from Microsoft. Do this for each file found. If it's not from Microsoft (or doesn't even have a version tab) and it was created recently, then delete it.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Run L2MFix also - option #1 and post that log here as well.

This ( c:\windows\system32\WMIwvz.dll)
was created March 31, 2005. Is that recent enough to need to delete it?

There were only 4 things I could find to check and fix in the list you gave me. Here they are...

I only found one of the Files/Folders you told me to delete. This is the one. C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

The search for m?config.exe only had 3 files and they were all more than a year old.

The HiJack This log is below. When I tried to do L2MFix I got this message....

Copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Now try running L2MFix.

For that c:\windows\system32\WMIwvz.dll file, I want you to zip it up first (using Winzip or whatever zipping program you have) and then delete it. If you have no problems running programs or using Windows in general after one week, you may delete that backed up zip file also.

Try running L2MFix again. I just want to make sure the other infection is not there anymore.
