;) I have somehow acquired VS2 and Searchclick. They're driving me nuts. After running everything I can find, including AVG antivirus, adaware & Spybot search and destroy, it just won't go away. Adaware says my system is clean, when I run the utility for removing VS2 but when I do another scan it still comes up in the log. When I try to delete the files using adaware, the program freezes up. :tazz:

I did a scan with Hijack This. Here's the log.

my email is: [email protected]

Hi Musikman212 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Please print out or copy this page to Wordpad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

1. Please download, install, update and configure Ad-Aware SE 1.06 according to the directions provided at the bottom of my post in the signature pane.

2. Please download and unzip
AboutBuster to a folder on your desktop.
  • AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
  • Check the AboutBuster Tutorial for instructions.
  • Don't run it yet.
3. Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://www.trendmicr.../cwshredder.exe

4. We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
* Click OK.

5. Know how to boot into Safe Mode

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

*turn the computer off
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

1. Reboot into safe mode

2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

C:\WINDOWS\IEVO32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATLGK.EXE

If you find the files, click on them to highlight them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll/sp.html#14044
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {83BA9B58-8288-E961-5F21-99294F8F7291} - C:\WINDOWS\MFCWO.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [IEVO32.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\IEVO32.EXE /s

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

4. Using Windows Explorer, locate Delete the following files/folders (and all their content) if present:

C:\WINDOWS\IEVO32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATLGK.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system\drrln.dll
C:\WINDOWS\MFCWO.DLL

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

5. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. It will ask to scan the system again, let it. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Run Ad-Aware.

8. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

*Temporary Files
*Temporary Internet Files
*Recycle Bin

9. Reboot into normal mode

11. Download and run this online virus scan if you can:<---Important
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

10. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did.

Thanks for the quick reply. I followed your instructions, started in safe mode then hit Control, Alt, Delete, but nowhere does it say "Task Manager." The only options are, End task, Shut Down and Cancel. the only item in the list is, Explorer. I stopped right there, so I wouldn't mess anything else up.
I'm running windows 98. Would that make a difference?. I neglected to mention that before, I guess.

Sorry to be so much bother.

Try running the script without that step. I have already changed the script twice because the one we use now won't work on 98 boxes.

I'm sorry. What do you mean by, "Run the script?" Does that mean to run Hijack This?
I'm afraid I'm a little dumb about these things.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
* Click OK.

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATLGK.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATLGK.EXE

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

To start your computer in Safe Mode:
*turn the computer on
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.
*Restart your computer when finished troubleshooting

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders (with all their content), and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATLGK.EXE

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

2. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
