Slow start up for XP

I have a problem with XP all of a sudden. It seems that when I try to boot my CPU running Windows XP professional It takes about 5 minutes to load. What happens is when the system first boots up I get the message saying " Windows is starting up" but then it takes about 3 to 5 minutes before I can actually enter my password to login. I have 3 CPU's and I am having the same problem with 2 of them can someone please help me?

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I have also noticed that I am unable to access the windows update site so I cannot install service pack 2. My browser acts like it is going to the page but it never does, although my address bar states that I am on the update site but I never really leave my home page.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.


-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

Followed your instructions but after rebooting I have no network connection I get a message stating that "a network cable is unplugged" This is not possible. Also when I rebooted my system is still slow to letting me login with my password.

The entries I had you delete were minor housekeeping issues. Nothing to make you lose connection. I will have to research this.

Was XP the original program installed on the computer or is it something you installed later on?

Still takes alot of time before I can actually see my name and enter my password. When I turn on my CPU It stars to go thru the boot process but when it says "Windows is starting up" it takes about 3-5 minutes before that will go away and I can enter my login password>
