.... and error ridden. I suspect spyware or worse and would appreciate help.

The only things i've really done so far is to run adaware and spybot S&D, my lapsed version of McAfee and stinger. I also deleted most of the temp files as part of a failed attempt to get the disc cleanup utility to work/complete, I did however complete a disk defrag.

Hope I'm not getting too far ahead of things, with my first post, but here is a copy of the HJT log:

Welcome RobRoy. First, we need to remove the pepper trojan. Download this file, run, and let terminate (it'll just blink briefly on your screen and won't appeared to have done much--this is normal):
http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=18

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

Thanks for the reply. When I selected 'open' on the downloaded program it appeared for a few moments and then vanished without appearing to do anything.
I hope that is what was to be expected. I then rebooted, ran adaware (which found and deleted several new objects) and then ran the following fresh HijackThis log:

Oh, honey. Pull up a chair. We will get through this log. It may take several steps, but we'll get it done. <_<

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall any of these programs if they are there:

Viewpoint Manager

If your McAfee has lapsed and you're not going to renew it, uninstall it and download a free version of an anti-viral product. If you don't have that, we are wasting our time. The computer will be reinfected very quickly.

ForbesAlerts
Web_Rebates
Searchbar
Webspecials

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.geekstogo...n=download&id=5

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

You have sooo many bad temp. files in your system. Please be very meticulous:

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

Happy Thanksgiving, coachwife6 (and all) and I'm thankful for the support.

Last night I pretty much completed following your list of instructions, to the best of my ability, including running ad-aware per your directions. This AM, however, I thought I'd run it again and again found several(9) 'new objects' (data miners).
Some things I was not able to delete and and some things I thought I had uninstalled (like forbes) are still aqppearing on the list. Still exe errors , still can't run disk cleanup, still........

Anyway, I then rebooted, and here is the fresh HijackThis log:

This is a long, tedious fix. You need to be very meticulous and clean out your temp. files. Did you have trouble doing that before? We need to make sure we do it now.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked[/

"This is a long, tedious fix. You need to be very meticulous and clean out your temp. files. Did you have trouble doing that before? We need to make sure we do it now."

Yeah, I did have some trouble, before....particularly with the temporary internet folders and hidden folders....I didn't know how to find/clean them all out and meant to get back to that and I'm afraid that I neglected to do so. I think/hope that I did a much better, job this time around, with the help of your additional instructions.

I got a HijackThis error (error #70) when I did the fix with a request to email the particulars to "merijn" (which I have not acted upon to date).

After going through the whole routine, my system got a clean bill of health from Ad-Aware only to once again have the BargainBuddy bugs (6) reappear when I re-ran Ad-Aware. I also tried the disk cleanup again and it still doesn't appear to be working. The system on a whole, however, is running much better than when I/we started this. Thanks for all of the patience.

Here is the latest HijackThis log:

Shucks, thanks.

Oh, BTW, earlier when you told me that I no longer needed McAfee now that I had AVG...I had deleted the McAfee VirusScan and just kept the McAfee 'QuickClean' not that I can't live without it but that wouldn't really hurt to keep, or would it, as it is a separate program from the virus scan?

Also, do you have guidelines for cleaning out the temporary files as you did with the temporary internet files as I'm not sure that I'm doing that the most thorough and/or easiest way? All I've been doing each time is doing a files/folders search for 'temp' and going through whatever comes up and doing my best-guess deleting. What about, for instance, the 'Temp' file in C:\......Administrator\Local Settings? Is it OK to delete the contents of that?

Well, thanks again for all of the help, and here is the HJT log (still some 'bugs'):

How is it running?

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D

Thanks so much, you guys are great!

My system seems to be running fine now. Ad-aware still, though, detects the (6) BargainBuddy objects every time. I can remove them and immediately re-run Ad-aware, without touching anything else, and they will be there again. Also, I still can't successfully run the disk cleanup utility.

I intend to take your advice re the SpywareBlaster, etc..

Thanks, again!

I've had some pro blems on 2000 machines with disc clean-up. Do what I do - but I'm kind of a freak about my temp. files. This might not be the "politically correct way" to delete temp. folders, but I go to start>>right click>> and get to explore and find all the temp. folders and delete the contents of the folder. Make sure hidden files are showing.

Be sure you're able to view hidden files,

Good luck. Is Bargain Buddy in add-remove programs?

Thanks coachwife6,

For the disk cleanup tool problem, after some searching, I was led/ended up at the microsoft support site http://support.micro...kb;en-us;812248 and used their 'workaround' which worked great.

Nah, BargainBuddy isn't to be found in add/remove programs....I did, however, find it in regedit. I'm still digging into that problem (advice welcome <_< )

Well, I haven't, so far, been able to get any further with this by following the advice in your link, etc.. Here is copy/paste of a partial Ad-aware scan showing the reslts I've been talking about :

As I said, Ad-aware will not delete these. Is this any cause for concern or just harmless remnants and what (if anything) do you think I should do about it?
