Hi,

Somehow I've gotten infected with the PS Guard.
I ran Spybot and it found nothing.
Ran Trojan Hunter and Housecall and it didn't find the PSGuard or its related files (like Intell32.2xe).
Had a problem running Panda Anti-Virus
Can't run Ewido as I'm on Windows 98
Ran Ad-Aware and deleted everything it found, yet PS Guard and the Intell32.exe re-install themselves.
Ran smitreg and it told me that my C:\Windows\System\Wininet.dll was infected and I downlaoded a new copy of Wininet.dll but Windows won't let me overwrite the infected one.
Went through my registry and deleted HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall\PS Guard

Ran Hijack this to see if I'm missing something and here's my log. If someone could please help me as how to get rid of this re-occurring PSGuard --

Welcome to GTG.

When did you get this smitRem file? If not very recently (like July 31), please delete the one you have and get the one below. I actually don't see PSGuard signs here.

What's the problem with Panda? Do you have Java installed? Is it the latest version (1.5..)? If it is, I want you to uninstall it, and install version 1.4.2 instead. Try Panda again at the end (see fix below).

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Achn] C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\asts.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)

Run the smitRem.exe file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Delete these if found:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\asts.exe

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido log (if you ran it).

Hi,

Thanks for your help. Followed the steps (except for Ewido since I'm on Windows 98). Looks like this time the Panda Active Scan disinfected the Wininet.dll that was infected, but here's my logs in order:

Hi,

It seems that I've finally scrubbed PS Guard and smitfraud.d out of my system, but when Panda ActiveVision disinfected my wininet.dll it took it out of my system.

Okay, no big deal, I downloaded a new wininet.dll and put it in my C;\Windows\System folder, but now every time that I reboot my computer, on startup it tells me that the wininet.dll is missing and I have to keep placing the new wininet.dll in my Windows\System folder.

Any idea why this is doing this?

Thanks for any help.

Sorry about that. I came here a little too late :tazz:

We were just told about this problem and yes it seems like Panda "kills" the wininet.dll file instead of disinfecting it.

Let's see if we can get that file back. Do a search for wininet.dll on your computer and see if you can locate that file anywhere (besides the one you are copying it to - that one doesn't count ;) ). If so, please reply back and tell me where it's located.

If the above does not work, then try this:
Go to Start->Run and type in sfc and hit OK. Choose to do the full system scan. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. If it restored the file, restart and see if there's that missing message again.

Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\resource.dll
D:\Program Files\America Online 7.0a\organize\writerguyjon.ARL
