Hi there,

As you can see im in great need of some help :tazz:
I have tried to get rid of all three of these pests but have not been successful. Any help to eliminate them would be greatly appreciated.

Ill start off with Malware.Psguard - Ive run several programs such as ad-aware, spybot - search and destroy aswell as webroot spy sweeper which successfully deleted it but it always returns almost straight away. At this moment as i type, secretmaker is continuously blocking psguard from downloading content onto my PC.

Win.P2P-Worm.alcan.a - is in a similar boat. Doesnt matter how many times i delete the file when detected, when i do another scan that same day or the next day, it is present again.

W32.Desktophijack - Norton is unable to repair this file and was previously being detected as Bloodhound.W32.EP until i updated my defintions today. I have tried to remove this using Norton's instructions but i could not complete it as NAV does not run on my computer in safe mode.

These problems are my own fault as i was un-educated and nieve when it came to protecting my PC until i was infected. But hopefully you can guide me threw resolving this mess.
Thank you very much.

This was recieved using LimeWire and was causin LimeWire to run on start up so i uninstalled it. I also found a bunch of Zip files totalling 850Mb which i had never downloaded in a hidden folder in my Documents and Settings folder which i also deleted and beleave it came from limewire.

Hello Truer and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Please note that I have merged both your posts into one thread to stop you getting two helpers working for you. You have what appears to be two Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable SpySweeper from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Redirect] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysbho.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\winupdates\

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysbho.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

hi there,

thank you so much for your quick reply.
its really appreciated.

Yes, my computer is a family PC and there are two different user settings although the other is very rarely used, almost never.
I followed all your instructions as requested. When i set the system to show all files to look for the folder C:\Program Files\winupdates, i found C:\Program Files\windows updates which was hidden and empty so i deleted it as asked.
At this stage i am stil getting the alert from NAV about W32.Desktophijack and secretmaker is still blocking Psguard from trying to download onto my PC. But it doesnt seem like Win32.P2P-Worm.Alcan.a was detected by ewido.

thanks once again for all your help.

here are the new hijack and silent runners logs.

Hello again

Please stay with main user settings and I will attempt to clean the PC. When I’m satisfied, I will look at the other user and ensure it too is clean.

Your latest HJT log is clean, the Ewido log is good, and silent runners is showing one hijack, which I think is a false positive. This is the highlighted folder: C:\Program Files\Roxio\PhotoSuite 4\Internet\ I really cannot see Roxio hijacking anything although their programme is known by Spybot to leave tracks.

Your description of the problem sounds familiar, so let’s try the Smitfraud fix.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let me know if any problems persist.

Also, please supply a HJT log for additional users. Please mark them accordingly.

Hi again,

Good news! I ran smitRem and it identified bloodhound.W32.EP which was the high risk warning i was getting from NAV before W32.Desktophijack. The wininet.dll file which was infected was fixed and replaced with a file from the dllcache.

The only problem is that smitRem froze as it was trying to do its cleanup and with my so called intelligence i ran it again and it replaced the logfile containing this information ;) .
I do remember what else isnt on the log though.
Psguard came up in Program Files and intell.exe came up in the System32 folder. Im not sure what intell.exe is but i had been previously blocking it from executing with secretmaker as i wasnt sure if it was a another bug.

When i then ran ad-aware after smitRem, it still picked up 10 files of Psguard so im not sure if its still active.
And im not sure if Win32.P2P-Worm.Alcan.a is still present either as it has not been identified throughout these last actions.

As i got out of safe mode, NAV detected W32.Desktophijack and i was happy to see it could repair it now thanks to smitRem :) and i since have not recieved anymore warnings about it.

Once again i got to thank you so much for all your help! :tazz:

Here are the logs you requested.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Happy safe surfing!

You are very welcome.

Of those programmes you mentioned, I would keep:

NAV2005
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D*
Firefox
Ewido
CCleaner

* use it with Tea Timer setting to provide real-time protection.

I will leave this thread open for a few days in case of misfortune.
