I will be glad to donate at least $20 if you can help me remove these malwares. You leave your mom home alone with the computer for one night, and this is what happens. hehe. Im just guessing, but I think what Im supposed to do is display a log from i HijackThis scan, so here it is. Thanks very much.

Hello Dustin and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Spyware Doctor from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CWShredder
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.oneclicks...es.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

D:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
D:\WINDOWS\system32\intmonp.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hi again. I did everything you asked. A couple notable things. Ewido security suite, when I ran my scan, it went only to 71.4% and said finished. Also, I don't know if you're able to, but I could only past one item at a time into Killbox. So I pasted D:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe, then rebooted, then did the other one and rebooted. Both in safe mode. I am no longer getting the "you computer is infected warning" and there don't seem to be any more ad popups; however, my desktop is still not my own. I don't have the option to change the background in the display settings. Here is my log from ewido, followed by a new HijackThis log. Thanks.

I am tired and my eyes hurt. No excuse though. I noticed you had directed me to deactivate Spyware Doctor before the fix. I did not do this. I just noticed it. I think ive deactivated now, I clicked deactivate on guard protection. Do think I should now repeat the process? Thanks again for your help

After 5 minutes, my PC has returned to its original level of infection it seems. I think alot of spyware was eliminated, but the psguard background is still on my desktop, and the infection warning is on the quick start menu. Internet explorer is randomly disconnecting. I hope my PC stays active long enough to maintain correspondance so that I might fix this. Thanks again.

Hello again Dustin.

Yes I'm afraid that the Spyware Doctor is the likely culprit. Basically it stops anything from being changed, so after a normal reboot, all the malware is put back in situ. Safe mode will stop you from having internet access, that's why we do all the downloading in normal mode and then switch.

Please repeat the first fix with a twist for what appears to be Smitfraud infection (below) with Spyware Doctor deactivated in real time.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let me know if any problems persist.

Yay. It worked. My desktop is back. All infections are gone, for now. You were a huge help. I can't thank you enough. I swear, if I met someone at a coffee shop or pub, and started talking to them, and they told me they make and distribute spyware for a living, I'd punch 'em right in the face. Really, what kind of absolute [bleep] can can feel all right about making spyware knowing how much damage it causes. They should all have their hands amputated. You were a great help. Im glad there are people like you fighting against these terrible malwares. Thanks again so very much. Here are my logs.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Happy safe surfing Dustin! And thanks for your generosity!
