Hello FunnyMan and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a little malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Temporary Folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Whilst MS Anti-Spyware will get rid of malware, it also restores home pages, so we have to adjust it.

• Open Microsoft Antispyware.
• In the right upper corner go to Advanced tools
• Please click on "Change restore setting to a new URL".
• Change it to something you would like to use as your homepage.
• If prompted for the change, allow it.
• When the left hand side is showing a 'good' restore, press "Restore This Setting Now".
• We need to get a non-infected page there, something like http://www.geekstogo.com

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

for some reason i am unable to download anything from the internet. whenever i try to download some installation file from the internet, it just shows on he status bar that the file is being downloaded, but i don't see the usual dialog box and i don't even know where the file goes, the only way i can download anything is my p2p! all this happened after i installed some download manager called 'Fresh Downloads' from the cnet website.

Not being able to download anything conventionally is not going to make this easy.

Can you carry out the HJT fix?

I have knowledge of the Fresh download manager and have never heard of a problem with it, however, if something else was in the bundle that you downloaded, who knows what you have?

Try uninstalling the Fresh download manager, see if it helps or do a system restore to a date before the problems started.

Also, please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).


Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Thank you very very much!!! The website problem was solved, but, i still can't download anything. whenever i click on any download link, it automatically downloads the file into the temporary folder and i don't see the download box that i used to see before i started a download earlier. Now, when i click on any download link, the status bar looks something like the attached file

Hello again

Your log is looking better and nothing obvious hits me when I read your uninstall list. Your problem looks like it might be MSN Messenger related. Can you disable it? It might just help.

Since you can't do an online scan, please try this:

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\Program Files\MusicMatchJukeBox\Anti-Spy\gcasDtServ.exe
C:\Program Files\MusicMatchJukeBox\Winamp\winamp.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Try to reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\MusicMatchJukeBox\Anti-Spy\gcasDtServ.exe
C:\Program Files\MusicMatchJukeBox\Winamp\winamp.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post a fresh HJT log afterwards.

So glad I have made a difference. That is good news. Alas, you are not yet clean. There is still one piece of malware to flush out.

Please visit Kaspersky for an online scan.

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\Program Files\MusicMatchJukeBox\Winamp\winamp.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\MusicMatchJukeBox\Winamp\winamp.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The programme will ask you if you want to reboot, just answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

actually, the file 'winamp.exe' is a media player that i installed a long time ago, i wish to keep it as i use it a lot, so is there any way, that i can use to fix my computer without deleting this file

Check your PC for another Winamp. Normally it is in its own folder. The one I have highlighted is in the wrong folder and is a virus.

Often viruses or virii copy names of legit files to save themselves being deleted. We have to look at its location not just the name.

Did you carry out the online scan?

actually, i had installed the file in that foler. That is the only winamp on my computer. I install all the programs(that only i use) in that folder. So, i don't think that would pose any threat at all. But if u still insist, i will do what u suggested.

No it's probably OK then.

If you put it there, it must be OK. There is quite a lot of malware which uses winamp.exe as a name, but puts it into other folders, which is what we look for to identify them.

If you would be kind enough to supply a fresh HJT log, I'll take another look.
