For some reason, my computer has just begun to pop up ads for WinAntiSpy. WinAntiSpy seems to be a spy removal tool, which seems ironic since they advertize using spyware. I can't figure out where the malicious bugger is running from, and scans with the most current versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot don't seem to fix the problem.

Here is my latest HijackThis log file. Any help would be appreciated.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

WinAntiSpy seems to be a spy removal tool, which seems ironic since they advertize using spyware.

It's actually a very common tactic. <_< Be sure to investigate any spyware removal program before installing it on your system. A list of bad spyware removal prgrams is maintained here: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02F96FB7-8AF6-439B-B7BA-2F952F9E4800} - C:\DOCUME~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\Temp\pilld.dat

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch <- this folder
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\harddll.exe

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :D

Thanks for the reply. I was able to successfully accomplish everything save one item. I have been unsuccessful in removing the file dllip.exe. It claims it is in use, but WhoLockMe won't show which program is using it (obviously Windows, in this case). I renamed the file and was able to delete it, but upon reboot, the file reappears. I hopped into the registry to remove the following items:

HKLM\..\Run: [*dllip] C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\dllip.exe
HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*dllip] C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\dllip.exe rerun

The problem is that as soon as I alter or delete the second file, it simply reappears.

Either way, my machine seems to be running smoother, but the fact that I can't remove that file unnerves me.

Did you run Disk Cleanup in safe mode, or try deleting that file in safe mode?

Yes, both. But the asterisk in front of the registry file indicates that the process still runs in safe mode, I believe.

Yes, you're correct. Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract TheKillBox.exe from the zip file and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\dllip.exe

Click 'Exit' when done.

Note: If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run: http://www.javacools...ngfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Turns out that I ended up with the Vundo Trojan. I had all sorts of trouble trying to uninstall those files when my anti-virus popped up claiming the bug was on my machine (how it got there and why it took so long for my anti-virus to catch it is beyond me). A download and scan with the removal tool seems to have fixed the problem. It shut down the appropriate processes and deleted the following files:

registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{02F96FB7-8AF6-439B-B7BA-2F952F9E4800} (key deleted)
registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02F96FB7-8AF6-439B-B7BA-2F952F9E4800} (key deleted)

This seems to be spreading very recently.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D

We highly recommend installing SP2. Click here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
-or-
It's a very large download, so if you're on dial-up, order a free CD here:
