Do any of you play really visually complicated games or run professional graphics applications? Then you probably have a pretty good graphics card, right?

My question is for those with only a PCI slot available (integrated graphics card here), and or those who know about PCI cards. I am in sales, but my love is art, and im slowly breaking into the world of graphic art, now that i'm comfortable with my fine arts styles. But im also an intuitive person (scientific tinkerer) not a details person. So i like to work on a hundred things at once and just figure them out in a trial by fire. That's means im getting as many programs as possible, as is affordable (or findable), and starting to tinker with them. Well, i want a graphics card that handles the work. (And i dont want to have to buy another one later). Says one article:

However, consumer cards are not the best choice for this type of software. Would any of you be able to help me figure out what would likely be a great buy at a reasonable price? My gut tells me that spending $200 is too much, but that spending $100 might be too little? As for the details.....

If you want to get a consumer card then the price looks right. However if you are interested in a workstation level card then you will pay more. The key difference is workstation level cards are designed to a higher precision for on screen calculations, including the drivers. Because you cannot have graphical calculation errors when making CAD drawings.

Thanks for the report, that helps alot but we need to know what you are going to do with your system or want to do exactly. I know you said you will be using various programs but you need to be more specific to the types of programs.

Here is some food for thought: you don't need a very big/fast video card for 2D applications - like most traditional drawing programs tend to be. If you're going to be rendering complex 3D images (using OpenGL, Direct3D, etc...) or working 3D CAD, you will need something like a FireGL card from ATI (lots of $$$). I've traditionally heard a lot of people say they prefer the image quality of ATI cards over nVidia based cards, but I think they are pretty much the same these days.

For instance, I occasionally run CAD (Architectural Desktop) on my notebook (w/ integrated graphics) at work without any problems, and it can render simple things in 3D without any issue. If I was going to be doing 3D animation or more complex drawings, I would definitely look for a FireGL add-in card.

well you are really pretty much stuck there but as it is "art" you want to do and not complex structural drawings for say an architechtural firm it doesnt have to render everything perfectly as you wont notice when it doesnt for the most part, a normal consumer card will do you fine i would imagine.
