This is my first post so I hope I am doing this correctly. I have already run Spybot, AdAware, Clean Up, CWShredder, Nortons & updated Windows. We had AOL for about a month. Now we are using IE with a cable modem. (dont know if that info helps or not) I first noticed these problems when WinFixer arrived. I thought I got that all taken care of. Guess there is still something nasty in my computer. Any help will be MUCH appreciate!

Hello Michelle and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting (I did note that you share a folder with Ron).

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have very little malware that need to be eradicated; I may have to look deeper if this doesn’t fix the problem. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I am always suspicious of screensavers, and whilst I have not found anything bad about this one on your PC, C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssstars.scr, did it get installed about the same time as your problems started?

I note that you are running HijackThis its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
Ad-Aware

Install Ad-Aware and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page.

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Thanks for the help! Sorry for my delay in responding. We couldnt even connect to the internet without winfixer trying to install. I think I completed everything like you listed. That nasty winfixer hasn't reappeared yet. Thank goodness!!! I need to read up on how to prevent these things from happening. Our cable internet provider said they dont have anything to prevent these things from happening because "your computer should have come with a firewall." Gee, thanks for the help their cebridge! lol OH, forgot to add, the screen saver we use is one that came with the computer or XP, I forget which one. I was rather hoping to have seen the Ewido log too, it tells me what the state of your HDD was and also the status of your restore points.

If you still have it saved to your PC somewhere, I would still like to see it. If not, please run it again and send me the fresh log, it might just give me a clue.

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Hello again Michelle

The logs are looking better, but something is not right. If you look at your last two logs, you'll see a few 015 entries. They have been put there by malware in order to allow access to more malware at a future date.

In the last fix we tried HJT to delete them and it failed, so there is something lurking, invisibly that I am now going to have to guess at. Here's my first guess.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

To be sure can you please repeat the last fix. Please note you are fixing the infection using #2.

You are still sending me the find log and not the fix log.

Let me explain better.

You ran part one of the L2M fix, that is option #1 the findwhich produces a log of bad files (which is the one you have posted 3 times and I have seen 3 times)

I look at it and confirm the infection and ask you to go to option #2 the fix, and then you send me the log and I check to make sure all the bad files, and no good files have been deleted.

Before copying and pasting a log into this thread, just check the date, and also use PREVIEW before posting. It should look something like this:

I DID #2, just like you said. When it restarts my computer, there is NOT a log that pops up. I thought the way to get a log for you was to enter #1 again. What am I supposed to do now?

This is the instruction for the FIX


The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!


When your PC reboots, go get a coffee and come back 10 minutes later when the programme will have finished and notepad will have opened with a log.

Do not press any other buttons.
