This system refuses to stay clean, despite my best efforts for almost a week. If my guess is right, the infection(s) came in when my brother took down the norton firewall then forgot to turn it back on and went on newgrounds. Besides the various spyware that refuses to stay off, I've got iexplore.exe running as a background process (no multiples when it's actually open, though) and what looks like randomly generated process names with it, although I've been writing them down as I end them and I know I've seen repeats. I've also taken off, among others, VX2, WildTangent, and ABetterInternet at least 10 times only to see them back again.

As far as programs go, I have and have already used Norton, AdAware, Spybot, and CWShredder, for every user in both safe and normal modes. And I've cleaned out my temps and restore points.

Anywho, the log will most likely be much more knowledgable than I, so here it is:

Hello and welcome..

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

Download
CleanUp

Run the CleanUp! installer and get the program ready to be used but don't run it yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Run Ad-Aware SE from the command lines shown in the instructions shown below.

Click "Start" > select "Run" > type the text shown bolded below (including the quotation marks and with the same spacing as shown)

"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\Ad-Aware.exe" +procnuke

(For the Personal version)

Please make sure that this setting is applied;

Click on Tweak => Cleaning engine => UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

Do a Full System Scan. Remove anything it finds. Exit Ad-aware.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • Clean anything it finds.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Run CleanUp! and make sure to reboot when prompted.

Boot up into normal mode.

Run these two free online scans here;

Trend Micro
Panda Activescan

Let them fix anything they can & post the results to your next reply!

Now, close any other open windows, run a new scan with HiJackThis and post the fresh log here along with the online scan & Ewido log's.

Ok, few questions here.

First off, I booted in safe mode and ran the AdAware string EXACTLY as typed, and the program booted normally with no hint of any way to change that control.

Secondly, should I have both norton and eovia at the same time? When I logged back on in normal mode the combination of the 2 went insane on my memory.

Also, under which user in safe mode should I be doing these things? Myself or admin? And if it should be under me do I have to repeat the process for every user on my computer?

Sorry for all the questions without logs, I just don't want to do things out of order.

Hi again.

First off, I booted in safe mode and ran the AdAware string EXACTLY as typed, and the program booted normally with no hint of any way to change that control.

? So when you launched Ad-aware SE from the Command line, the program opened. Then what? Did you change setting under Tweak and made the scan, or did something go wrong? Can you clarify this one for me please.

should I have both norton and eovia at the same time?

Ok, I have never heard of "eovia". If it is an Anti-virus software, then NO you should not. Use ONLY 1 anti-virus program at a time, uninstall the second one. Let me know what it is to determine better, if it's not Anti-virus.

Also, under which user in safe mode should I be doing these things? Myself or admin? And if it should be under me do I have to repeat the process for every user on my computer?

Simple answer. Do this process to the account you're having trouble with. If both, then both. I'd need log from both accounts if that's the case.

Sorry for all the questions without logs, I just don't want to do things out of order.

Good good, ask more if you have to ask. I don't want you to do steps wrong.. If somethings unclear, go ahead and ask ;)

For the AdAware, I meant that nothing came up that said "Tweak". I didn't see anything at all about changing settings, actually.

Also, my mistake: I didn't mean eovia, I meant ewido. I can't even remember what eovia is, I think it's something to do with some game software. Nothing virus or spywarey though. But the important part of this is I have both norton and ewido on here now, and I'd rather not uninstall norton. For now, I just turned off ewido's realtime protection so they wouldnt conflict. Its process was eating up around 14k of memory without the program even open.

And I think the problem is on all accounts... and there are 5 users on my computer. So should I do all 5 or just do mine for now and see if it clears up?

Yes, if you read the setup page correctly from the link I provided, you'll see that it asked you to disable realtime protection. And keep it disabled. Just update Ewido before going into Safe Mode & make sure to do the other settings from the page too.

You have the problem on all accounts? We'll just clear your own account first.. Then we'll see where we stand.

For the AdAware, I meant that nothing came up that said "Tweak". I didn't see anything at all about changing settings, actually.

What's your current version??

Ohh that it does... I guess I didn't quite read that part carefully enough... Sorry.

AdAware is 1.06. That is the most recent, right? I'm pretty sure I upgraded before all this started.

Ok. No more carelessness on my part. I appreciate the patience. I'm so eager to be rid of this that I'm starting to get careless.

Ok.. Read the Ad-aware Setup here;
http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm

Then make sure that this setting is applied;

Click on Tweak => Cleaning engine => UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

(It's not on the Setup page)

Read Ewido Setup. Update both of the programs and install CleanUp!

Then follow the process. For now, you can just ignore that command line thing with Ad-aware..

I figured out the AdAware thing right after that last post of mine... it's pretty hard to change settings when you don't even hit the button to pull them up... :tazz:

Even after these, IE still has a toolbar. I think it might be the ABetterInternet one, but I'm not positive, especially since none of the scans managed to get rid of it.

Anywho, here's the logs:

Can you please run a new HiJackThis scan and post the log, this time make sure WordWrap ISN'T on in the notepad, it's quite hard to read the log like this.

Post this too;
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and paste the List from the notebook onto your post

Hi again!

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix. Be sure to ask any questions before proceeding the fix.

Download
CleanUp

Run the CleanUp! installer and get the program ready to be used but don't run it yet.

Update Ewido to it's latest definitions. DISABLE Ewido's background guard.

Update Ad-aware.

Now do this;

Click Start => Run => and type in;

services.msc

Click "OK".

In the services window find service; System Startup Service (SvcProc)

Right-click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then "Ok". Exit the Services utility.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka62.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".
  • Do that for the following files also. When you get to the last one, click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
c:\windows\SvcProc.exe

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Run a scan with HiJackThis and check the following objects for removal;

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - c:\windows\SvcProc.exe

Close any other open windows and/or open browsers, making sure that only HiJackThis is running. Make sure that the above mentioned objects are all checked, then hit "Fix Checked".

Open Ad-aware and do a Full System Scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • Clean anything it finds.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Go to Add/Remove programs from Control Panel and uninstall the following entries if present;

SurfSideKick 3 (Or anything what says SurfSideKick)
Viewpoint Manager

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folders and delete if present;

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\
C:\WINDOWS\etb\
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\exp

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files and delete if present;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
athlc12n.exe <= Locate using Windows Search- function
c:\windows\system32\fqmjjfa.exe r
c:\windows\SvcProc.exe

Run CleanUp! and reboot.

Boot up into normal mode, and run the following online scan;

Panda ActiveScan

Let it fix anything it can and post the results here along with a fresh HiJackThis & Ewido log.

Ok, looking a little better. Few things to take care of though;

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QBUninstaller.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "Yes".

Uninstall the following program, it's not clean. Once we get your system clean, I will give you a link where you can see list of clean/infected file-sharing programs.
Go to -> Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and uninstall;

Kazaa

Exit Control Panel.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folders and delete if present;

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Aprps
C:\PROGRAM FILES\nCase
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\DIANE\FAVORITES\Casino & Carrers
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\DIANE\START MENU\PROGRAMS\WhenU
C:\Program Files\Kazaa

Run CleanUp! and reboot.

Boot up into normal mode and do the following;

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers" to download the program.
  • Double-click the file to install it as follows:
    • Click "Next", read the agreement, Click "Next"
    • Choose "Custom" click "Next".
    • Leave the default installation directoy as it is, then click "Next".
    • UNcheck "Run SpySweeper at Windows Startup" and "Add Sweep for Spyware to Windows Explorer Context Menu". Click "Next".
    • On the following screen you can leave the e-mail address field blank, if you wish. Click "Next".
    • Finally, click "Install"
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
    Disable SpySweeper Shields
    • Click Shields on the left.
    • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
    • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
    • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Once the definitions are installed and shields disabled, click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Post the SpySweeper log along with a fresh HiJackThis log from normal mode.

I uninstalled Kazaa already, ages ago... it was amazing how much better the system ran without it. I know it doesnt show up in the Add/Remove anymore or I'd have done it again. Should I just skip the uninstall and do the manual deletes instead?

By the way, I have Limewire now. Any unsafe things there?
